About The Position

The Staff Accountant assists in all functions related to the financial operations of an assigned department and any related entities within Cook Children's. Cook Children's is a not-for-profit organization comprising a flagship medical center, a new medical center, a physician network, home health company, surgery centers, health plan, health services, and health foundation, with over 60 primary, specialty, and urgent care locations throughout Texas. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or similar plus 1 year experience, or equivalent work experience (minimum of 5 years accounting experience)
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft applications such as Excel, including graphing and complex formulas often linking multiple worksheets (very high level of usage)
  • General software literacy
  • Trending and "what if" skills
  • Accuracy and timeliness
  • Initiative-taking and organized to meet all deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good presentation skills

Responsibilities

  • Assist in all functions related to financial operations of assigned department and any related entities
  • Primarily responsible for monthly accounting transactions, monthly account reconciliations, close process and supporting schedules
  • Prepare journal entries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and healthcare-specific regulations
  • Maintain subsidiary ledgers, such as fixed assets
  • Maintain accounting schedules for real estate and operating expense accounts
  • Assist with preparation of work papers for the independent auditors and other functions related to financial reporting at the system level
  • Support the Physician Practice Financial Managers (PPFM’s) in analyzing accounts and responding to information requests from outside the department
  • Maintain working relationships with directors and other staff and interact with a professional attitude
  • Complete assignment of ad hoc projects in addition to normal monthly duties
  • Attend meetings as required
  • Work independently and continually improve processes
