The Finance Department exists to provide accurate, transparent, and timely financial information that supports ministry while honoring biblical principles of stewardship. The Staff Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations of Higher Dimension Church, ensuring financial transactions are accurately recorded, reconciled, and reported in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards. Working collaboratively with the Finance Senior Project Manager, outsourced Bookkeeper, and Fractional CFO, this role serves as the primary in-house accounting professional responsible for maintaining financial records, supporting payroll and accounts payable, preparing reconciliations, monitoring budgets, and ensuring compliance with established financial policies and internal controls. This position plays a critical role in safeguarding church resources while providing timely financial information that enables ministry leaders to make informed operational decisions. The Staff Accountant supports the church's commitment to financial integrity by ensuring all transactions are processed accurately, timely, and in accordance with established policies and biblical stewardship principles.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (Advanced)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Experience with accounting software such as Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or similar ERP systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience.

  • CPA candidate or nonprofit accounting experience is a plus but not required.
  • Nonprofit or church accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience working with outsourced accounting or finance teams is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Maintain organized accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Process vendor invoices and payment requests.
  • Verify invoices for accuracy and proper approvals.
  • Maintain vendor files, W-9s, and payment documentation.
  • Coordinate ACH payments and check processing.
  • Monitor outstanding obligations and vendor inquiries.
  • Review payroll submissions for completeness and accuracy.
  • Coordinate payroll processing with outsourced payroll providers.
  • Reconcile payroll reports and benefit deductions.
  • Reconcile payroll to the general ledger.
  • Prepare recurring financial reports for leadership.
  • Assist with monthly budget-to-actual reporting.
  • Prepare supporting schedules for financial statements.
  • Assist with departmental budget tracking and expense analysis.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations and supporting schedules for leadership review.
  • Ensure compliance with church financial policies and procedures.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation.
  • Support preparation of tax filings, grant reporting, and financial compliance documentation.
  • Recommend improvements to accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Serve as a financial resource to ministry leaders regarding approved expenditures and purchasing procedures.
  • Assist departments with budget questions and financial documentation.
  • Support financial reporting for church events, conferences, and special initiatives.
  • Participate in cross-functional ministry planning meetings as requested.
  • Assist with implementation of new financial systems and technologies.
  • Support special financial projects assigned by the Finance Senior Project Manager or Fractional CFO.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
