About The Position

The Stacker Operator is responsible for safely operating the lumber stacking system on the sawmill. This position ensures lumber is properly sorted, stacked, aligned, and transferred to the next stage of production while maintaining production flow, product quality, and housekeeping standards. The Stacker Operator plays a critical role in minimizing downtime and ensuring safe, efficient operations in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Manufacturing or sawmill experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to safely operate industrial equipment after training.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Ability to recognize lumber quality issues.
  • Ability to monitor multiple conveyors simultaneously.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Strong situational awareness.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to understand production goals and quality standards.
  • Basic computer or HMI (Human Machine Interface) experience is helpful.
  • Stand and walk for up to 12 hours per shift.
  • Frequently climb stairs and platforms.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Push, pull, and carry materials as needed.
  • Work in hot, cold, humid, dusty, and noisy environments.
  • Work around moving machinery and heavy industrial equipment.
  • Wear all required PPE including: Hard hat, Safety glasses, Hearing protection, Steel-toe boots, Gloves, High-visibility clothing.
  • Maintain sufficient vision, hearing, and depth perception to safely perform job duties.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a lumber manufacturing facility.
  • Experience operating automated stacking systems.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of Southern Yellow Pine lumber manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the automatic lumber stacker and associated equipment.
  • Monitor lumber flow to ensure continuous production without interruptions.
  • Inspect lumber for obvious defects, improper dimensions, or quality concerns and notify supervision when issues arise.
  • Remove damaged or jammed boards safely following Lockout/Tagout procedures when required.
  • Monitor stack alignment to ensure properly built lumber packages.
  • Verify proper placement of stickers (when applicable) and package quality.
  • Communicate effectively with sawyers, trimmer operators, forklift operators, and supervisors regarding production issues.
  • Keep conveyors, stackers, and work areas free of debris and wood waste.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections before and during shift.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions and report maintenance needs promptly.
  • Assist maintenance personnel during repairs as directed.
  • Maintain production records or electronic entries as required.
  • Follow production schedules while meeting quality and productivity expectations.
  • Assist in other production areas as needed.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, accidents, or near misses.
  • Never bypass machine guards or safety devices.
  • Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures before clearing jams or performing maintenance.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping throughout the work area.
  • Participate in all required safety meetings and training.
