About The Position

Responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the stable area to ensure the safety, welfare, and proper care of horses, compliance with racing regulations, and efficient coordination among horsemen, trainers, veterinarians, farriers, and racing officials. This is a seasonal position for the Summer race meet at Colonial Downs.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of Thoroughbred horse care, stable operations, and racing industry practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including trainers, horsemen, regulators, and internal departments.
  • Working knowledge of equine health, safety standards, and emergency response procedures.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record and a minimum of 3 years of driving experience.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia Racing Commission racing license.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of three to five years of experience working in Thoroughbred racing stable operations or a related equine environment preferred.
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily operations of the stable area, including stall assignments, barn conditions, and adherence to stable rules and racing regulations.
  • Ensures the health, safety, and welfare of all horses housed on the grounds in coordination with trainers, veterinarians, farriers, and regulatory veterinarians.
  • Acts as a primary point of contact for trainers and horsemen regarding stable operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with state racing commission rules, track policies, biosecurity protocols, and equine welfare standards.
  • Conducts routine inspections of barns, stalls, wash racks, tack rooms, and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness, safety, and proper maintenance.
  • Coordinates with Facilities and Track Operations to address maintenance, repairs, water, electricity, waste removal, and pest control within the stable area.
  • Monitors and enforces safety procedures related to horses, equipment, vehicles, and personnel in the stable area.
  • Responds to emergencies involving horses, including injuries, illness, fire, severe weather, or other incidents, and coordinates appropriate response.
  • Maintains accurate records related to stall occupancy, horse movements, incidents, and compliance documentation.
  • Attends required meetings, briefings, and regulatory inspections.
  • Resolves problems that are within the position’s scope of authority and recommends courses of action to resolve issues beyond the scope of authority to the supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
