About The Position

The SRS Research Administrator Assistant Manager Pre-award is responsible for working their Assistant/Associate Director in developing, organizing, implementing and overseeing pre-award activities among their team; ensuring that their team achieves their goals in a timely manner; provides customer service feedback to external customers and working with team members to ensure that the appropriate message is being delivered; assisting the training team in developing plans for educating the proposal administrators in consistent practices with proposal and budget preparation. In addition, the Assistant Manager will work with their Assistant/Associate Directors on pre-award team workloads as well as effort management and departmental outreach activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years of experience in a university or business environment developing budgets and proposals including proposal preparation and/or identifying potential sponsor/funding opportunities and/or project management in the field of research administration.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Attention to detail skills and ability to work productively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience within the Texas A&M System or other university setting.
  • Working knowledge of interpreting funding opportunities and electronic research administration portals.
  • Experience with interpreting federal, state, and Texas A&M System regulations as they pertain to sponsored research.
  • Progressively responsible budgeting and proposal administration experience.
  • Advanced experience using Excel, Word, Adobe, Maestro, and Cayuse.
  • Strong mathematical and comprehension skills.
  • Experience in providing customer service.
  • Certified Research Administrator/Certified Preaward Research Administrator (CRA ® or CPRA®)
  • Developing large scale budgets and proposals.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the guidance of an Assistant/Associate Director to manage the pre-award team in determining solutions to complex issues associated with proposal submissions.
  • Provides support to researchers in the preparation of proposals which includes determining the sponsor’s requirements and preparation of budgets and forms according to the guidelines established by the Texas A&M University System, Office of Management and Budget, Federal Cost Accounting Standards and sponsor guidelines.
  • Prepares supplementary proposal documents and ensures proposals are complete before being forwarded to the sponsor.
  • Prepares proposal revisions and responds to requests related to proposal submissions.
  • Collaborates with Assistant/Associate Director on communication with researchers, department/unit heads, deans, directors, and staff to resolve proposal issues and provide information as needed.
  • Works with other managers and Assistant/Associate Directors in training and mentoring pre-award teams.
  • Assists less experienced staff in making recommendations to Assistant/Associate Directors regarding non-standard pre-award issues.
  • Responsible for assisting in the hiring process.
  • With oversight from the Assistant/Associate Director the Assistant Manager will make recommendations and implement workload distribution.
  • Reviews proposals for compliance issues.
  • Reviews program announcements and with minimal direction determines pertinent proposal requirements.
  • Communicates guidelines and proposal requirements to Principal Investigators.
  • Acquires basic knowledge of human subjects, animal subjects, Recombinant DNA, Export Controls, etc.
  • Review quality control comments and provide feedback to team members.
  • Provides support to researchers in the submission of proposals, enters proposal information into required submission systems (i.e., Grants.gov, etc.) and financial systems.
