About The Position

The Sr. Systems Engineer will be responsible for assuring uptime, resiliency, high performance, best practices for security and data integrity, and support releases, features, and functionality for infrastructure systems with CU Direct. Expertise in Microsoft technologies, such as Windows Server, Azure, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Office 365, failover cluster, and non-Microsoft technologies, such as monitoring systems and logging systems.

Requirements

• Four-year college degree in computer science or equivalent degree, or equivalent work experience and certifications
• Recent Microsoft technology certification(s)
• Minimum of five (5) years experience performing server technology related tasks in a virtualized environment, such as installing, configuring, sizing, tuning, backing up and restoring data, and maintaining high availability and disaster recovery in an environment containing primarily Microsoft technologies, such as Windows Server, Azure, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Office 365, failover cluster, and non-Microsoft technologies, such as monitoring systems and logging systems
• Experience working in an environment with high Microsoft SQL Server systems demands and performance expectations
• Experience with cloud platforms, such as Azure, and experience migrating on-premises systems into the cloud.
• Implementing new related systems, such as backups, replication, and virtual desktop systems
• Working in a cross-functional multi-team environment
• Demonstrates experience in evaluating systems environments, developing and documenting solution plans, and drive projects to completion
• Experience with designing, developing, and maintaining systems automation (PowerShell, automation tools, code, etc.)
• Experience with systems troubleshooting
• Work independently with a high level of initiative with the ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines
• Strong oral, written, analytical and interpersonal skills
• Capable of working independently and making judgement calls in alignment with overarching objectives and policy
• Maintain relevant skillset with Microsoft and other technologies used by CU Direct through research, reading, attending conferences, and classwork
• Knowledge of server, domain controller, and related systems optimization techniques
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently resolve difficult performance and functionality issues with Microsoft technologies and other technologies used by Origence

• Pivotal Cloud Foundry experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Server and software uptime
• Prevent downtime
• Follow and assist in developing procedures for deploying changes safely and without service interruption
• Utilize available tools and independent research to identify better ways to prevent downtime
• Detect potential uptime threats
• Determine health and identify potential problems utilizing monitoring tools and independent research
• Regular system health evaluation and monitoring tool optimization
• React to downtime
• Support and optimize high availability and disaster recovery models to minimize downtime
• Be available, provide expertise, and rapidly recover from system disaster
• High performance
• Provide recommendations and follow change procedures to assure ongoing server configuration optimization
• Regularly review server and software configuration and utilization and work with other information technology personnel to recommend improvements
• Evaluate server and software configuration and performance and tune for optimal efficiency and performance
• Discover the root of performance problems and provide recommendations
• Data Integrity / Loss Prevention
• Regularly review server configuration and recommend data integrity and loss prevention improvements (disaster recovery, replication, etc.)
• Support regular data backup and data corruption detection systems and recover as needed
• Expertise and Security
• Microsoft server and related technologies (such as Active Directory, Azure, DHCP, DNS, and Office 365) expertise, plus general engineering systems understanding
• Research, test, and recommend the use or non-use of emerging technologies in regards to servers, particularly in a virtualized environment
• Perform server systems administration tasks such as installation, upgrade, configuration, backup, restore and maintenance
• Develop and maintain standards and automation to rapidly deliver optimized and uniform server system configurations
• Integral to migrations from our data centers to Microsoft Azure and ongoing support, and build-out and support of Pivotal Cloud Foundry.
• Follow industry best practices and CU Direct policies and procedures to assure maximum security
• Follow the principle of least privilege: grant minimum permission required to do task
• Assure all sensitive data is encrypted and/or stored securely to prevent a data breech in accordance with requirements
• Features, Functionality, Release Support
• Support and operations, which sometimes occurs off-hours and late nights
• Understand holistic architecture, systems architecture, data architecture, etc.
• Provide recommendations that solve problems or improve performance to deliver best customer experience (without compromising core values such as security or other practical considerations such as maintainability)
• Consistently support and model corporate and departmental culture and mission
• Develop and present regular systems health reports (such as utilization, trending, risks, etc.)
