Sr. Systems Design Engineer

Advanced Micro Devices, IncMarkham, ON

About The Position

At AMD, the mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. The company fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration, believing that real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity, and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. Joining AMD means experiencing a culture that pushes the limits of innovation to solve important challenges, striving for execution excellence while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive. The IP Systems Engineer will be part of AMD’s S3 (Strategic Silicon Solutions) Business Unit, focusing on System Management and Power Management IP for next-generation semi-custom SoC programs. This role covers the entire silicon lifecycle, from pre-silicon planning and verification to post-silicon bring-up, validation, debug, and customer support, including embedded firmware development for internal micro-controllers. As a key technical contributor, the engineer will ensure the delivery of high-quality, industry-leading IP by driving robust validation strategies, resolving complex HW/FW interaction issues, and advancing AMD’s IP verification and bring-up methodologies. The ideal candidate is a hands-on IP systems engineer proficient in both low-level firmware and silicon debug, technically curious, self-driven, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. They enjoy working closely with hardware, taking ownership of complex problems, and driving tasks to completion across multiple phases of silicon development. The candidate should communicate clearly, lead by influence, and be motivated to continuously improve tools, processes, and technical approaches. Prior experience mentoring or providing technical leadership is a strong plus.

Requirements

  • Experience with embedded firmware, low-level software, and post-silicon verification
  • Strong proficiency in C, C++, assembly, and scripting languages
  • Hands-on experience with IP- and system-level bring-up and ASIC debug methodologies
  • Extensive lab experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and related debug equipment
  • Board- and platform-level debug experience, including power delivery, clocking, sequencing, and optimization
  • Strong understanding of system architectures and HW/FW interactions
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience mentoring or providing technical leadership
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following domains: System Management, Power Management, Graphics, Display, or Multimedia, PCIe, IO, or Security architectures
  • FPGA or emulation experience

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute HW/FW functional test plans and overall verification strategies for System Management and Power Management IP
  • Drive technical innovation in IP validation and verification, including development of tools, scripts, and improved methodologies
  • Engage with pre-silicon verification activities, including FPGA-based emulation, Design Verification (DV), and system modeling frameworks
  • Develop and maintain embedded firmware in C for an internal micro-controller
  • Create utility software and automation using C++, Python, and/or Perl as needed
  • Debug HW and FW issues discovered during pre-silicon, silicon bring-up, validation, and production phases
  • Lead cross-functional technical discussions to resolve complex issues and deploy technical initiatives
  • Support customer platforms in collaboration with customer support teams when required
