About The Position

The Sr. Surgical Technologist, in addition to assisting in the preparation, processing, care, and maintenance of instruments, supplies, and equipment, functions as a member of the surgical team during operative procedures, also functions in a specialty service, and utilizes and troubleshoots service implementation and equipment. The individual must know aseptic technique and be able to scrub independently in orthopedic procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon, and have knowledge of the sequencing of the surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist participates, under supervision, in the implementation of Operating Room Nursing Care and performs tasks related to both direct and indirect care of patients in the O.R. The Senior Surgical Technologist is accountable to the clinical and administrative nursing staff of the O.R. It is essential that the Surgical Technologist is a team player collaborating with the nursing staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and all of the peri-operative staff. The Surgical Technologist must work to facilitate the care of the patient in a safe and expeditious manner. The Surgical Technologist will demonstrate competence in performing the duties and responsibilities required by his/her job description. Orthopedic scrub experience is required. Exemplary customer service is required.

Requirements

Two years Orthopedic experience as a Surgical Technologist in an ambulatory setting
Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
High School Diploma; or equivalent experience
The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

Responsibilities

Complies with established policies and procedures related to work schedule. Reports for work on time. Uses the time reporting system correctly to verify time worked. Confirms and signs time sheets. Wears official UCSF identification during working hours. Follows guidelines on use of sick time and other benefit time.
Develops a plan that prescribes actions to achieve patient goals. Establishes priorities for actions. Organizes activities in logical sequence. Modifies actions as appropriate to ages served. Coordinates patient care needs with team members and personnel from other disciplines. Coordinates use of supplies and equipment for intra-operative care. Assists in coordination of patient care needs with team members and personnel from other disciplines. Controls environment. Prepares for potential emergencies.
Assists with positioning patient properly for surgery. Maintains correct anatomical position. Demonstrates awareness of appropriate position for maximum surgical exposure in supine, prone, lateral, lithotomy or other positions. Procures and utilizes appropriate supports, padding and restraints.
Demonstrates knowledge of responsibilities regarding anesthesia administration. Identifies hazards and preventive actions to minimize risks in the administration of anesthesia.
Complies with safety and emergency procedures consistent with departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrates in daily practice and understanding and awareness of maintaining a sterile field that is consistent with safe practices in an oxygen enriched environment. Demonstrates role during patient care emergencies. Achieves and maintains current CPR certification. States procedures for reporting fire. Locates alarms, hoses, extinguishers and fire exits. Identifies role in a disaster, whether internal or external. Demonstrates awareness of occupational hazards in the perioperative area.
Demonstrates knowledge of different methods of sterilization. Discusses how steam, gas, Sterrad (plasma) and cold sterilants are used to sterilize objects. Identifies criteria for choosing method of sterilization. Demonstrates safe and correct use of steam sterilizer and Steris.
Performs surgical hand scrub, sterile gowning and gloving. Complies with policy and procedure regarding OR attire. Performs surgical hand scrub according to procedure and observes principles of aseptic technique. Gowns self and dons sterile gloves using closed gloving technique. Assists other team members to don sterile gowns and gloves.
Creates and maintains sterile field. Uses principles of aseptic technique in all situations. Inspects sterile items for contamination before opening them. Maintains sterility while opening sterile items. Recognizes and initiates corrective actions when breaks in aseptic technique occur. Controls own movement within the sterile field and functions within the designated area. Guards and maintains the sterile field. Observes the techniques of others in and around the sterile field. Demonstrates knowledge of use and handling disposal of medications on sterile field.
Provides equipment and supplies based on patient needs. Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies. Selects equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner. Ensures all equipment is functional before use. Operates mechanical, electrical and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer's instructions. Removes malfunctioning equipment from service. Coordinates with the circulating nurse and ensures that emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times. Uses supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner. Communicates provision of equipment and supplies to assist in charging for items. Participates in the time out check for availability of necessary equipment, supplies and Implants before surgery.
Performs counts. Follows established policies and procedures for counts. Initiates corrective actions when counts are incorrect. Communicates results of counts according to policy.
Monitors and controls the environment. Regulates temperature and humidity as indicated. Correctly uses warming devices according to manufacturer's instructions. Adheres to electrical safety policies and procedures. Adheres to OR sanitation policies and procedures. Communicates environmental controls.
Respects patient's rights. Demonstrates awareness of the individual rights of the patient. Provides for privacy through physical protection and maintaining confidentiality. Identifies cultural beliefs. Communicates provisions for patient's rights.

Performs in role of specialty service (Ortho, Neuro, Pediatric, OHNS, Plastic Reconstructive, cardiothoracic, Vascular, GU, GYN and oncological specialties) technologist under the direction of the Clinical Supervisor. Reviews the specialty service schedule with the Clinical Supervisor to assess equipment and surgical assistant staffing needs. Demonstrates knowledge of specialty related anatomy and physiology. Demonstrates the ability to safely utilize and troubleshoot service instrumentation and equipment. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and prioritizes daily workload while apprising the Clinical Supervisor or Charge nurse of his/her availability. Collaborates with Biomedical technicians regarding repair maintenance of equipment. Assists the Clinical Supervisor and CNIII with service-related activities such as checking carts, ordering supplies, etc. Collaborates with other members of the specialty service team regarding patient care decisions and operational issues. Communicates patient information in a timely fashion and maintains confidentiality.
Actively participate in quality of care endeavors and the National Patient Safety Goals. Fully participates in the surgical time out including procedure/patient/side/site verification; ensuring availability of pertinent equipment, instruments and implants before surgery. Fully participates in all quality improvement activities, including but not limited to, flash sterilization logs, indicator and sterilization verification, etc.
Participates in staff training and development. Precepts new staff, students, trainees in the scrub role. Provides feedback regarding preceptee progress. Act as a resource to new staff, students, and trainees. Meets and exceeds all senior surgical technologist criteria.
Customer service is essential, inclusive of patients, co-worker, surgeons, sales representatives and other guests.
