Sr. Staff/ Principal Software Engineer - Building Automation Systems

Monolithic Power Systems, Inc.•Kirkland, WA
•$170,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) is seeking a hands-on, technically exceptional Software Engineer to support the software strategy, architecture, and execution for its Building Automation Systems (BAS) product line. The BAS group develops integrated hardware, firmware, and software platforms for commercial building controls, energy management systems, and intelligent automation technologies. The role owns the full technology stack, spanning software, embedded firmware, device connectivity, cloud services, data pipelines, and user-facing applications. The engineer will shape the software direction of the Kinexis Smart Building Automation platform, build and mentor an engineering team, and partner with hardware, product, and systems engineering teams to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable commercial building solutions. This position combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering in a high-performance hardware-and-software environment. It calls for expertise in real-time control systems and the ability to scale a platform integrating IoT devices, sensors, gateways, cloud analytics, and building-level automation workflows.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 5 years in a senior technical leadership role.
  • Proven experience building and scaling complex, multi-layered platforms spanning software, embedded systems, cloud, and applications.
  • Strong background in embedded systems, real-time firmware, IoT connectivity, and device-to-cloud architectures.
  • Expertise with modern cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Azure, or equivalent, and scalable backend design.
  • Experience with communication protocols used in building automation, such as BACnet, Modbus, MQTT, BLE, Zigbee, or similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence cross-functional stakeholders, and deliver high-reliability systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in building automation, industrial controls, energy management, or IoT device ecosystems.
  • Familiarity with power electronics, sensor systems, or hardware-software co-design.
  • Experience with OTA update systems, device provisioning, and secure embedded architectures.
  • Prior leadership in high-growth or hardware-centric technology companies.
  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end platform architecture, including software, embedded firmware, device communication protocols, cloud services, data pipelines, and user applications.
  • Define and enforce architecture standards for reliability, security, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Drive innovation in real-time control, sensor fusion, energy optimization algorithms, and building-level automation logic.
  • Build, mentor, and scale a high-performing software engineering organization.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership while guiding teams across embedded, cloud, and application layers.
  • Oversee development of mission-critical firmware for building automation controllers, sensors, and power modules.
  • Ensure high-quality engineering delivery through CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and performance monitoring.
  • Partner with internal and external teams to integrate platform components, modules, and third-party interfaces.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, systems engineering, product, QA, manufacturing, and field engineering teams.
  • Translate customer requirements, building-automation standards, and regulatory constraints into robust software solutions.
  • Support key customer engagements, technical deep dives, and strategic partnerships.
  • Ensure platform reliability, cybersecurity, and data integrity across BAS software components.
  • Lead efforts involving secure boot, encrypted communication, OTA update security, and compliance with building-automation standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement in system robustness, fault tolerance, and long-term maintainability.
