Sr. Spec, Structural Engineer (Stress Engineer)

L3HHCM20Greenville, TX
Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking qualified individuals to join our Aeronautical Systems Engineering team as a Stress Engineer. In this role, you will perform analysis of aircraft structure using classical and finite element analysis methods to develop free body diagrams, calculate internal loads and stresses, and write margins of safety for static strength. You will lead a small team of other stress engineers by mentoring them on technical problems and managing their budget and schedule performance. You will also support the development of engineering estimates for bids and provide input for a monthly labor forecast for your team. The selected candidate can sit in Greenville, TX, Rockwall, TX, or Plano, TX and the position will be On-Site.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of the application of finite element analysis with Femap and MSC Nastran for FAA projects.
  • Familiarity with FAA and military airworthiness requirements for static strength.
  • Able to travel to and from flight lines and work in aircraft hangar environments (some positions will require the ability to board/exit aircraft).
  • Willing and able to travel. (5%)
  • Excellent computer skills including working knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree with six (6) years of commercial fixed-wing transport category airplane fuselage structural analysis experience.
  • Graduate degree with four (4) years of commercial fixed-wing transport category airplane fuselage structural analysis experience.
  • In Lieu of a degree, minimum of ten (10) years of commercial fixed-wing transport category airplane fuselage structural analysis experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter.
  • Skilled in automating calculations using VBA in Excel or another programming language.
  • Experience in engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Use classical hand analysis and create finite element models to predict internal loads, displacements, and stresses for complex structure.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to develop aircraft modifications and installations and ensure the design meets airworthiness requirements.
  • Generate free body diagrams and calculate internal loads and stresses.
  • Develop structural tests and post-process the results to establish allowable strength data.
  • Document structural analysis in formal reports to show compliance with airworthiness requirements.
  • Manage personal work to stay within scope, budget, and schedule for assigned tasks.
  • Mentor and lead other engineers in performing structural analysis.
  • Estimate engineering labor hours for formal bids and manage labor forecasts for a small team of engineers.
  • Analyze the static strength of aircraft structure with classical methods from publicly available data.
