About The Position

PayPal, Inc. seeks Sr Software Engineer in San Jose, CA. This role involves providing technical guidance to a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. The engineer will demonstrate end-to-end ownership of software features, projects, modules, and services throughout the software development lifecycle. Key responsibilities include leading the design and implementation of end-to-end software solutions for client-side applications, contributing to architectural discussions, and advocating for best practices. The role also requires proactive optimization of software performance, ensuring clean, scalable, high-performing, secure, and reliable software services, and improving automated test strategies, build, and deployment processes. Collaboration with other development teams for seamless integration and deployment, and communication with technical and non-technical partners are essential. The engineer will conduct code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and stay updated with the latest industry trends in web development, observability, and DevOps. Participation in program planning and influencing the product and technology roadmap is also expected. Partial telecommuting is permitted from within a commutable distance.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field plus two years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field plus five years of progressively responsible experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Designing and implementing solutions using JavaScript (2 years)
  • Server-side application development with Node.js (2 years)
  • React for building scalable, performance front-end applications (2 years)
  • Designing and developing APIs using GraphQL (2 years)
  • Continuous integration and deployment tools such as Jenkins or GitHub actions (2 years)
  • Docker and Kubernetes for deploying and managing microservices (2 years)
  • Unit and E2E testing frameworks, such as Jest, Mocha, or Playwright (2 years)
  • AWS, GCP, or Azure for deploying and managing cloud-based applications (2 years)
  • SQL and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL or MongoDB for designing and optimizing data storage solutions (2 years)
  • Monitoring and observability tools such as New Relic, Splunk, or Prometheus for tracking application performance and troubleshooting (2 years)
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance to a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate end-to-end ownership of software features, projects, modules, and services that the team delivers in all phases of the software development lifecycle.
  • Lead a software team's design and implementation of end-to-end software solutions towards client-side applications.
  • Lead architectural discussions and contribute to the overall technical direction of the client-side software applications, advocating for best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Proactively optimize software performance, identifying and resolving bottlenecks via monitoring, logging, and metrics to enhance the user experience.
  • Act as a strong advocate for clean, scalable, high-performing, secure, and reliable software services, in all areas, including coding, documentation, and automation.
  • Proactively identify and implement critical non-functional requirements (Availability, Security, Performance, Scalability, and Observability), and improve automated software test strategies, build and deploy processes to enable speedy and reliable continuous integration.
  • Collaborate with other development teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of client-side software applications, automating and enhancing build, test, and deployment processes.
  • Communicate with all technical and non-technical partners and stakeholders (Architecture, Developer Experience, Product, Design, Analytics, Legal, Marketing, etc.) as well as with the team to ensure shared understanding around the new software products and features under consideration.
  • Conduct formal and informal software code reviews, providing constructive feedback to team members to ensure software code quality and adherence to clean and scalable software coding principles.
  • Mentor and guide junior software engineers, fostering their professional growth and promoting a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
  • Stay up-to date with the latest industry standards, tools, and technologies related to web development, observability, and DevOps practices, and drive their adoption within the team.
  • Participate in program planning, influencing the product and technology roadmap and driving outcomes.
