Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building web services in a modern programming language (Java strongly preferred; C# or Go also welcome)
• Built and deployed applications for the cloud, preferably AWS
• Solid understanding of network protocols, HTTP, and REST API design
• Experience designing and working with distributed systems
• Experience with relational and non-relational database systems
• Experience with scale, performance optimization, and building for fault tolerance
• Experience with test automation patterns and frameworks
• Continuous learning mindset — the tooling, the patterns, and the pace of change don't unsettle you, they excite you. You adapt quickly, absorb new concepts eagerly, and bring others along with you.
• Genuinely enthusiastic about AI — you follow the space, you experiment, and you have a point of view on where engineering is heading
• Actively use AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) in all parts of the software development lifecycle
• Hold a 4-year technical degree or equivalent experience

Nice To Haves

• Hands-on experience with AWS (ECS, EKS, API Gateway, S3, SQS, Lambda, Aurora)
• Some experience with front-end development, preferably React
• Experience with messaging brokers (Kafka, ActiveMQ)
• Experience working with Agentic coding frameworks like Strands in a professional context
• Bring a genuine enthusiasm for AI — you follow the field, you form opinions, and you help teammates level up their own AI fluency

Responsibilities

• Own your services end-to-end — from design and development to testing, operations, and production monitoring. You build it, you run it.
• Create and maintain REST APIs (Java/Spring), customer-facing dashboards (React), and the cloud infrastructure (AWS) that powers the Numbers platform.
• Lead solutions from start to finish, collaborating across teams to iteratively ship value aligned to customer and business needs.
• Identify and solve scaling problems through both application development and infrastructure optimization, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
• Mentor junior and mid-level developers through productive code reviews, thoughtful design discussions, and by modeling the engineering standards you want to see on the team.
• Partner with product owners and stakeholders to translate requirements into well-designed, maintainable solutions — contributing to feature sizing and technical roadmap discussions.
• Use AI as a core engineering tool — not occasionally, but daily. You reach for AI assistants in code generation, design exploration, debugging, and documentation, and you do it with the confidence of someone who knows the fundamentals well enough to lead the AI, not just follow it.
• Drive continuous improvement — look critically at what we're building and how we're building it, and originate ideas that advance both our craft and our platform's reliability.
