About The Position

PayPal, Inc. seeks Sr Software Engineer in Chicago, IL. This role involves designing and implementing infrastructure-as-code solutions for scalable deployments, contributing to team productivity and agile processes, and participating in system architecture discussions. The engineer will collaborate with tech leads and architects on major initiatives, introduce advanced performance monitoring, and work with other engineers to enhance services. A key aspect is gaining a deep understanding of Braintree's external APIs and designing integration patterns. The role also includes debugging distributed systems, maintaining documentation, driving technical strategy discussions, strengthening security practices, and managing end-to-end delivery including CI/CD pipelines and automation. Participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation is required. Partial telecommuting is permitted.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field, plus five years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Experience with Linux (RHEL, CentOS, SUSE) (5 years).
  • Experience with Shell (5 years).
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tool: Terraform or Ansible (5 years).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and developing automation scripts to streamline infrastructure tasks (5 years).
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and cloud architecture (5 years).
  • Experience designing high-level and detailed technical solutions (5 years).
  • Experience with Proxies and infrastructure scaling technologies: Apache, Apache (HA) Reverse Proxy, and Nginx (5 years).
  • Experience with AWS services, including EC2, S3, and VPC (5 years).
  • Experience with Kubernetes, EKS, and AKS (5 years).
  • Experience collaborating within a team of engineers and with stakeholders, and managing vendor relationships (5 years).
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement infrastructure-as-code solutions for repeatable, scalable deployments.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of team productivity, agile processes, and methods to enhance efficiency.
  • Actively participate in system architecture discussions and technical design reviews to ensure the scalability, reliability, and security of Braintree.
  • Collaborate closely with the team’s tech lead and architects to advance large initiatives.
  • Introduce advanced performance monitoring and alerting systems to proactively identify and address potential issues.
  • Work alongside engineers both within and outside the team to develop and enhance our services.
  • Collaborate and integrate with multiple engineering teams effectively.
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of Braintree's external APIs and design integration patterns for optimal performance and reliability.
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues across distributed systems and microservices architectures, including root cause analysis across service boundaries.
  • Improve and maintain thorough documentation for all systems and processes to facilitate knowledge sharing and onboarding.
  • Drive team discussions on technical strategy, system architecture, and component design.
  • Strengthen security practices and conduct regular security audits to ensure the infrastructure's robustness.
  • Drive end-to-end delivery, including CI/CD pipeline design, infrastructure automation, and deployment strategies.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for the services we manage.
