Sr Software Engineer, Promotions Platform
About The Position
Senior Backend Software Engineers at PayPal build the reliable, high-performance systems powering millions of secure transactions globally. You'll design, develop, and optimize scalable backend solutions using Node.js and other server-side technologies to build robust APIs, microservices, and data-driven systems. Partnering with cross-functional teams, you'll translate complex business needs into elegant technical solutions. As a technical leader, you'll mentor junior engineers, champion best practices, and guide architectures that strengthen PayPal's global payment platform. The Consumer Engineering team powers the experiences millions of PayPal customers use daily to send, spend, and manage money safely. We partner closely with product, design, and data science to deliver innovative, customer-first solutions that advance PayPal's mission to make financial services more accessible, inclusive, and empowering for people everywhere.
Requirements
- 3+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Nice To Haves
- 5+ years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree, OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in Node.js for building scalable, production-grade backend systems.
- Experience with Express/NestJS (Node.js) frameworks.
- Strong experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.
- Familiarity with GraphQL or other modern API technologies.
- Solid understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases, including schema design and performance optimization.
- Experience with cloud-native development, CI/CD pipelines, and agile methodologies.
- Skilled in applying software design patterns, data structures, and algorithms to develop efficient and maintainable code.
- Excellent collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills with a focus on delivering reliable, high-quality software
Responsibilities
- Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles.
- Advises immediate management on project-level issues
- Guides junior engineers
- Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
- Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions
