Sr. Software Engineer, Payload Platform (BSP & Fabric), Project Sunrise

BLUE ORIGIN•Denver, CO
•$197,529 - $276,540

About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design. Join Blue Origin as we build infrastructure in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re developing a satellite constellation of orbital data centers, Sunrise, designed to transform how compute infrastructure is deployed and leveraged. Our team is developing next-generation spacecraft that push the boundaries of performance and capability in orbit. We are seeking a highly skilled platform software engineer to own the Board Support Package (BSP) and fabric bring-up for our accelerator compute payloads. You will be responsible for the lowest layers of the software stack—the code that makes the hardware work. This includes everything from the bootloader and Linux kernel to driver initialization and fabric management. This is a role for a deep, hands-on expert who is comfortable debugging complex hardware interactions in a remote, no-hands-on environment and who is passionate about building a reliable, high-performance computing platform for space.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 6+ years of experience in embedded Linux Board Support Package (BSP) or low-level platform software development.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with the software bring-up and validation of accelerator hardware (e.g., GPUs, TPUs) is required.
  • High proficiency in C/C++ and Python for embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with GPU programming models (e.g., CUDA, ROCm) and collective communication libraries (e.g., NCCL, RCCL).
  • Proven experience debugging hardware at the driver/firmware layer in an environment with limited observability.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Deep experience with fabric management software for large-scale accelerator clusters is a strong differentiator.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with pre-silicon emulation platforms, FPGAs, or early-stage reference hardware before final hardware is available.
  • Experience designing software for high-reliability, fault-tolerant, or remote/inaccessible systems.
  • Passion for and understanding of AI and Machine Learning applications in engineering, with a demonstrated ability to learn and integrate new technologies

Responsibilities

  • Develop and own the Board Support Package (BSP) for our accelerator compute modules, including the bootloader, Linux kernel bring-up, device drivers, high-speed interconnect enumeration, and the hardware abstraction layer (HAL).
  • Lead the software bring-up and validation of the high-speed compute fabric, including configuring fabric management software and validating GPU-to-GPU collective communications.
  • Implement and manage robust, in-flight health monitoring systems for the compute payload, tracking accelerator temperatures, ECC error rates, power draw, and interconnect performance.
  • Design and implement automated recovery mechanisms to handle radiation-induced soft errors and ensure system resilience.
  • Define and maintain the API boundaries between the platform software and higher-level services, including the inference runtime and job orchestration layers.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
  • Stock Options for all regular employees (working at least 20 hours/week)
  • Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Dependent on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on the company's intent to reward individual contributions and enable them to share in the company's results, or other factors at the company's sole discretion. Bonus amounts and eligibility are not guaranteed and subject to change and cancellation. Please check with your recruiter for more details.
