Sr. Software Engineer, Cloud Platform

Apera AI IncVancouver, BC
CA$150,000 - CA$190,000Onsite

About The Position

Apera is an innovative, Vancouver-based company at the forefront of robotics, AI, and machine vision. We are looking for a Software Development Engineer, Cloud Platform to build the infrastructure that gets Apera's vision software onto customer devices securely, repeatably, and without requiring extensive IT support. The role involves replacing current complex deployment methods with a robust platform that provides a secure, trusted channel to every deployed device, cloud-hosted deployment infrastructure with proper access control, and internal tooling for the engineering team. This is a high-ownership role on a small team where the individual will have significant influence on the roadmap, architecture, and development priorities.

Requirements

  • 5+ years building backend or platform infrastructure in production, with meaningful ownership of systems other engineers depend on.
  • Strong cloud experience (AWS preferred) and fluency with infrastructure-as-code; experience with successful migrations where the legacy system couldn't be turned off on day one.
  • Practical networking and secure connectivity depth (VPN and tunnelling, NAT traversal, certificate and identity management), with the ability to design solutions approved by customer security teams.
  • Real experience with authentication, authorization, and multi-tenant account models, including access control in environments where mistakes have physical consequences.
  • Comfort operating under a compliance framework such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, or TISAX, and a willingness to own the infrastructure side of an audit.
  • Python fluency and experience with job orchestration or data pipelines, with a focus on observability and cost management.

Nice To Haves

  • Managing fleets of edge or embedded devices.
  • Experience with air-gapped or disconnected deployments.
  • Containerized delivery to customer hardware.
  • Prior work in robotics, manufacturing, or another industrial setting.

Responsibilities

  • Build the connectivity layer to our devices, designing a secure and trusted channel for deployment, telemetry, and support that acts as the single point of contact between Apera and a customer's system.
  • Design and implement an account and permissions structure that works at enterprise scale, enabling IT managers to administer users and share resources, and own the infrastructure work for security certifications.
  • Migrate software deployment and device fleet management systems from on-premise hardware to the cloud without service interruption, owning the process of building, versioning, distributing, and authorizing updates, and implementing role-based access control.
  • Build the infrastructure to transfer data from devices into Apera's systems for triage, labeling, and debugging, ensuring field data feeds back into model training.
  • Develop cost attribution for training and storage, implement data lifecycle policies, separate development from production environments, and evaluate cloud providers for cost and capacity.
  • Enhance internal tooling by providing a user-friendly interface, documentation, sensible authentication, and status tracking for failed jobs.

Benefits

  • Generous stock option program
  • Company paid extended health, and dental coverage
