About The Position

The Organic Materials Directorate within Corning R&D specializes in solving complex technical challenges involving organic materials across all Corning businesses. The team leverages deep expertise in organic synthesis, with a particular emphasis on Advanced Flow Reactor (AFR) technology, to design and produce high-value organic molecules. Corning is seeking a Senior Research Scientist – Flow Chemistry to serve as a key synthetic chemist supporting the strategic expansion of AFR technology in North America. This role will focus on innovation in flow chemistry, development of scalable synthetic processes, and close collaboration with both internal teams and external customers.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry or related field with 2+ years of organic synthesis experience (pharmaceutical/fine chemical industries) OR PhD in Organic Chemistry with strong synthesis background.
  • Expertise in batch organic synthesis, including purification and characterization

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of analytical techniques such as NMR, GC-MS, UPLC, and FTIR.
  • Experience in flow chemistry

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in process development and optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Design novel organic molecules and synthetic routes optimized for AFR applications.
  • Develop, optimize, and scale flow chemistry processes, including troubleshooting to maximize yield, quality, and efficiency.
  • Execute both batch and flow synthesis to support research and development projects.
  • Collect, analyze, and document experimental data to support intellectual property development and patent filings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, material characterization specialists, and project managers, to deliver project objectives.
  • Provide advanced technical support to customers and build strong collaborative relationships to ensure successful AFR implementation.
  • Promote and guide laboratory safety practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in flow chemistry and related technologies, identifying new opportunities for innovation.
