About The Position

Join Amgen’s Mission of Serving Patients. Amgen is seeking a hands-on bioinformatician to develop computational tools and data infrastructure to support the Discovery Proteomics Group. The successful candidate will combine strong scientific expertise in proteomics, bioinformatics, and drug discovery with software engineering skills to understand experimental and discovery needs and translate them into fit-for-purpose computational solutions. In this vital role, they will conduct statistical analysis, data ingestion, database and tool development, and computational pipeline implementation for proteomics data to support biomarker discovery, target evaluation, experimental design, and mechanism-of-action studies. The successful candidate will join the Discovery Proteomics group at our South San Francisco campus.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree OR Master’s degree and 3 years of scientific experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of scientific experience
  • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Proteomics, or Biology.
  • Expertise in large-scale quantitative proteomics and other omics data analysis.
  • Fluency in Python, R, and SQL, and familiarity with analytic techniques/packages necessary for statistical analysis, data processing, data ingestion, data visualization, and basic machine learning approaches.
  • Working knowledge of Unix/Linux and cloud computing (AWS) environments.
  • Experience in version control, Docker containers, and other best practices for coding project management, reproducible data analysis, and documentation.
  • Strong background in biology or chemistry, especially as it pertains to human diseases in the fields of Immunology, Oncology, Inflammation, and Cardiometabolic Disease.
  • Proven track record of independent critical thinking and scientific achievement.
  • Strong verbal and written skills, and an ability to work independently as well as in small teams.
  • Willingness and ability to collaborate effectively across different scientific disciplines and with colleagues in cross-functional teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with deep learning packages is a plus.
  • Experience in meta-analysis with publicly available large proteomics studies (e.g., GTEx, CPTAC) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Development and implementation of data analysis, management, and visualization strategies for complex datasets generated by mass spectrometry and other technologies.
  • Work closely with scientists from different functions and therapeutic areas.
  • Deliver and present analysis results to key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across both genomic and proteomic platforms for data integration and mining.
  • Utilize available external resources where appropriate.
