Our consultants deliver safety and health services across industries, using curiosity, strategic thinking, collaboration, and data-informed insights to identify risk and drive continuous improvement. They build strong partnerships with policyholders by developing a clear understanding of their values and capacities through humble inquiry. Close collaboration with internal and external business partners such as safety specialists, return-to-work consultants, senior account representatives, underwriters, and agents is also key to success. This role emphasizes in-person, on-site engagement to strengthen relationships, deepen operational understanding, and support practical prevention strategies. These strategies include leadership development, strengthening safety culture, improving policies and procedures, implementing engineering controls, providing training, and more. To be successful in this role, you will need to bring self-motivation, curiosity, organization, and a strong foundation in occupational safety and health. You will also need the ability to communicate clearly, build trust, and gain commitment to preventing workplace injuries and illnesses. Note: Field employees are required to travel to SAIF’s offices in Portland, Oregon and to customer locations.

Requirements

  • Four or more years of increasingly responsible experience providing safety and health consultations and experience writing professional and persuasive documents.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree, coursework, or professional development leading to a professional designation or certification in occupational safety, health, or risk management is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Continually analyze injury trends, assess exposures and controls, and deliver impactful safety and health services to policyholders in an assigned book of business.
  • Prepare, manage, and prioritize how to effectively deliver safety and health services to policyholders.
  • Build collaborative relationships with policyholders in the assigned book of business to learn about their priorities, needs, and what they value.
  • Consult with policyholders to evaluate safety and health processes and exposures using a wide variety of methods, tools, and procedures.
  • Recommend mutually agreed upon safety and health strategies and injury prevention methods.
  • Identify industrial hygiene hazards and exposures and collaborate with SAIF industrial hygiene staff to assess sampling and service needs.
  • Conduct individual noise dosimetry and sound level monitoring as appropriate.
  • Monitor progress and follow up with policyholders on recommendations.
  • Apply book-of-business management skills to assure that assigned policyholders are reviewed monthly and contacted for service based on performance, industry, or retention using a variety of data sources and systems.
  • Evaluate, monitor and document the progress made by policyholders in safety and health efforts and communicate updates.
  • Compose detailed correspondence to policyholders and business partners prioritizing recommendations and summarizing services provided.
  • Utilize SAIF technology and systems to document work, analyze policyholder and book of business performance, and develop service strategies to help policyholders control injuries, illnesses, and incidents.
  • Provide Oregon-OSHA Division One services to policyholders.
  • Design, deliver, and facilitate safety and health training to policyholders in a wide variety of industries and work settings.
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal business partners, insurance agency partners, and member associations regarding safety and health services and opportunities.
  • Explore diverse perspectives and consistently behave sensitively toward differences in cultural norms, expectations, and ways of communicating.
  • Work effectively with others who have different perspectives, backgrounds, and/or work styles.
  • This position requires driving a SAIF vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of SAIF. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in their state of residence along with an acceptable driving record according to SAIF’s policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management to support team objectives and organizational goals, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in responding to evolving priorities and needs.
