About The Position

Under the immediate direction of the Manager and/or Supervisor of Security and Public Safety, the Senior Public Safety Officer utilizes extensive working knowledge of department operations to provide protective services to the South Shore Hospital community in a professional and supportive manner. Responsibilities include: functioning as a shift leader in the absence of a Manager/Supervisor, managing work-flow, functioning as a role mode/preceptor, and working to achieve department goals related to safety, professionalism, performance, productivity, and customer service. Performs a variety of security and safety related functions focusing on the protection of patients, visitors, employees, medical staff, volunteers and Hospital assets.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts proactive patrols of the Hospital campus, including parking lots and satellite buildings.
  • Identifies security vulnerabilities, safety hazards and violations of Hospital policy. Takes immediate correction action to mitigate the vulnerability or hazard, if possible. Collaborates with other departments to either mitigate or resolve, if warranted. Reports deficiencies to Manager/Supervisor and documents via an incident report or work order for required follow up and resolution.
  • Inspects perimeter doors, offices, suites, patient care areas, satellite buildings and other locations to assure that areas are secured in accordance with scheduled closings and department polices and procedures.
  • Provides escorts to patients, visitors, staff and others in conformance with established procedures.
  • Enforces Hospital smoking policy while on patrol.
  • Assures that all employees and other appropriate members of the Hospital community are in possession of a Hospital identification badge and that it is clearly visible. Consistently challenges all individuals without visible identification in an appropriate and courteous manner.
  • Assures that all unauthorized or suspicious individuals are identified. Appropriate follow up measures are implemented and documentation is completed.
  • Provides directions and answers questions in a courteous and service oriented manner.
  • Assure that satellite building burglar alarm systems are armed in accordance with established closing schedules.
  • Patrols parking lots during shift change and at other times in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Provides access control, granting access to locked areas and buildings to authorized staff and restricting access to unauthorized individuals.
  • Documents access control activities in conformance with department policies and procedures.
  • Assures that the access control system operates as designed and secures areas in accordance with established schedule.
  • Secures designated lobby areas with stanchions upon the conclusion of visiting hours and reopens in conformance with established schedule.
  • Able to activate Hospital-lock down upon the order of the Manager/Supervisor.
  • Assures that all material leaving the Hospital is inspected, if appropriate, and that only authorized articles are permitted to be removed.
  • Responds to emergent situations involving escalating and violent patients, visitors and others.
  • Assumes command and control over the scene during emergent situations, removes potential weapons and other items from the immediate area.
  • Communicates clearly and succinctly using de-escalation techniques.
  • Maintains proficiency in restraining patients by attending department sponsored training programs.
  • Post incident communicates positively and therapeutically with patient and family members.
  • Performs one-on-one observation with patients or patient details upon the request of a Manager/Supervisor.
  • Documents occurrences in conformance with applicable guidelines.
  • Responds to all emergencies and disaster situations and assumes a leadership role based upon the applicable policy and procedure.
  • Responds to a Code Red and fire emergencies and initiates actions to remove or reduce potential fire hazards. As a first responder, takes a leadership role during a Code Red. Conducts fire drills and completes required critiques and reports.
  • Responds to a Code Pink (Infant/Child Abduction) as outlined in applicable policies and procedures.
  • Responds to a Code Disaster Alert, Code Disaster Internal and Code Disaster External as outlined in applicable policies and procedures. Able to assume Safety Officer role and prepare the Security & Public Safety office/Administrative Control Center for the event.
  • Responds to a Code Blue (Bomb Threat) as outlined in applicable policies and procedures.
  • Responds to a Code Yellow (Chemical Spill) as outlined in applicable policies and procedures.
  • Responds to a Code Brown (Utility Interruption) as outlined in applicable policies and procedures.
  • Responds to a Code Silver (Active Shooter/Armed Intruder) as outlined in applicable policies and procedures.
  • Responds to medical emergencies in non-patient care areas as trained.
  • Responds to other emergencies, including panic alarm activations and building burglar alarms, as trained.
  • Completes incident reports in conformance with department policies and procedures.
  • Performs service related duties, including prompt and courteous service, collecting and securing patient valuables, responding to morgue assistance calls, assisting nursing staff with patient lifts, delivering supplies during off-hours, assisting with disabled motor vehicles, assisting Patient Transport staff, providing courier service, returning valet cars, and assisting patients and visitors locate lost motor vehicles.
  • Monitors the Hospital parking program, enforcing parking policies in a fair and equitable manner, documenting violations, responding to complaints, patrolling parking lots, and answering parking questions.
  • Monitors the access control system, including unlocking, locking, and resetting devices, and initiating Hospital-wide lock-down.
  • Monitors the video surveillance system, including selecting cameras, operating the device, and viewing recorded video data.
  • Monitors and responds to the activation of the infant protection system, identifying the involved patient, clearing the alarm, and updating identification data.
  • Produces Hospital identification badges, including entering data, taking digital images, and storing images.
  • Reports system malfunctions or maintenance needs and contacts approved vendors for repairs and maintenance during off-hours.
  • Able to access motor vehicle registration data.
  • Conducts initial investigations, responding to the scene, securing the scene, requesting assistance if required, receiving victim and witness statements, photographing the scene and evidence, securing potential evidence, and completing an initial incident report.
  • Completes incident reports and other required documentation, ensuring reports are objective, accurate, clear, chronological, and concise, and answering key questions (What, Where, When, How, and Why).
  • Completes reports in the IRIMS database and other reports as directed.
  • Coordinates snow removal efforts and responds to other weather-related emergencies, monitoring snowfall, contacting vendors, coordinating removal efforts, monitoring vendor services, assisting with stranded vehicles, transporting employees if authorized, shoveling sidewalks, and responding to other weather-related conditions.
  • Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
  • Attends all department sponsored safety training programs.
  • Makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Uses proper body mechanics when performing all aspects of job.
  • Adheres to respiratory etiquette guidelines.
  • Maintains a neat, organized work environment.
  • Operates department vehicles in a safe manner following the guidelines established in the fleet safety program.
  • In the absence of a Manager/Supervisor, oversees and is responsible for the Security and Public Safety Department during the assigned shift.
  • Monitors and supervises the activities of staff, rounds and conducts "spot checks" of areas of responsibility.
  • Assures that all patrol, access control and service responsibilities are completed in conformance with the applicable policy and procedures.
  • As a working supervisor, assists and supports staff and performs all the duties of a Security and Public Safety Officer, when required.
  • Assures that staffing levels on the assigned shift are adequate and sufficient to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Collaborates with other leaders and the Administrative Clinical Coordinator when issues or concerns arise during the assigned shift.
  • Assures that all Hospital and Security and Public safety policies and procedures are followed and enforced.
  • Assumes responsibility for the security and safety function of the Hospital in the absence of the Manager/Director.
  • Oversees the Hospital parking program, enforcing parking policies and procedures in a fair and equitable manner, and responding to parking complaints.
  • Oversees the Shuttle and Courier programs.
  • Responds to all emergent situations involving escalating patients, visitors and others as the senior Security and Public Safety representative.
  • Assumes responsibility for all responding Security and Public Safety staff during emergent situations.
  • Assumes the leadership role during emergent situations.
  • Assures that appropriate departmental procedures are followed during emergent situations.
  • Documents the incident in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Participates in continued learning and possesses a willingness and ability to learn and utilize new technology and procedures.
  • Embraces technological advances that allow us to communicate information effectively and efficiently based on role.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Performs work of equal skill and responsibility as directed. May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be requested to do work of a lesser responsibility when the work load so requires.
  • Completes all assignments within designated time frames as requested by Supervisor.
