About The Position

This role involves managing the design and construction of capital projects, including renovations, expansions, new facilities, infrastructure, and landscape projects. The position requires collecting, developing, and analyzing technical data to determine project requirements and preparing information regarding specifications, materials, equipment, estimated costs, and completion times. The incumbent will be responsible for managing large and/or complex clinical, research, academic, infrastructure, and administrative design and construction projects. This includes leading early project intake and providing Early Support for Projects (ESP) during front-end development, applying independent judgment in selecting methods and evaluation criteria to achieve results. The role operates under the general direction of the Associate Director of Project Delivery, ensuring projects align with customer needs, institutional priorities, and UCSF policies, and are delivered within scope, budget, schedule, and quality expectations. The position also involves applying creative problem-solving within the framework of California Public Contract Code, UC policy, and UCSF business practices, balancing diverse stakeholder perspectives to resolve complex challenges and establish effective project delivery strategies. The Sr. Project Manager will lead and manage design and construction activities, including oversight of consultants, contractors, stakeholders, and regulatory coordination, ensuring compliance with all applicable policies, codes, and standards. Proactive stakeholder communication is essential to ensure alignment between expectations and project outcomes. The role may coordinate the work of Real Estate Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers and contribute to continuous improvement of intake, ESP, and project delivery processes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the design and construction of capital projects, including renovations, expansions, new facilities, infrastructure, and landscape projects.
  • Collect, develop, and analyze technical data to determine project requirements.
  • Prepare information regarding specifications, materials, equipment, estimated costs, and completion times.
  • Manage large and/or complex clinical, research, academic, infrastructure, and administrative design and construction projects.
  • Lead early project intake and provide Early Support for Projects (ESP) during front-end development.
  • Apply independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to achieve results.
  • Deliver comprehensive project management services from initial customer engagement through project closeout.
  • Ensure alignment with customer needs, institutional priorities, and UCSF policies.
  • Deliver projects within defined scope, budget, schedule, and quality expectations.
  • Lead project intake and early development activities, including management of Project Intake Requests (PIR), problem assessment, scope definition, and facilitation of Conditions of Satisfaction.
  • Determine appropriate project pathway, level of support, or reassignment.
  • Manage pre-recharge intake efforts and coordinate with leadership when additional funded support is required.
  • Develop preliminary scope, cost estimates, and high-level schedules.
  • Identify risks, constraints, and related impacts.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Planning, Facilities Services, EH&S, IT, Real Estate Services) to validate assumptions and inform project direction.
  • Prepare and present decision-support materials to guide project authorization and next steps.
  • Apply creative problem-solving within the framework of California Public Contract Code, UC policy, and UCSF business practices.
  • Balance diverse stakeholder perspectives to resolve complex challenges and establish effective project delivery strategies.
