About The Position

This role is responsible for Product Execution, Technical Execution, Communication and Customer focus, and Professional Development. The Sr. Product Owner will own and maintain a healthy product backlog, document business outcomes, write and explain user stories, and prioritize work items based on customer value and business outcomes. They will act as the voice of the customer within the agile team, ensuring clear communication between stakeholders and the agile teams. The role also involves collaborating with Digital Product Managers and stakeholders to interpret the product roadmap, understand customer needs, and set sprint goals. Professional development is encouraged through learning events and sharing knowledge with others.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at hire and must maintain authorization to work in the United States throughout their employment with our company.
  • Minimum Internet Speed: 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, in alignment with the FCC's definition of "broadband."
  • Internet Type: Fiber, Cable (e.g., Comcast, Spectrum), or DSL.
  • Not Permissible: Satellite (e.g., Starlink), cellular broadband (hotspot or otherwise), any other wireless technology, or wired dial-up.
  • Candidates will be asked to test their internet speed and confirm that their connection meets or exceeds Symetra's standard.
  • Candidates will be required (after the initial phone screen) to be on video for all interviews.
  • Symetra will take affirmative steps at key points in the process to verify that a candidate is not seeking employment fraudulently, e.g. through use of a false identity.

Responsibilities

  • Owns and regularly maintains a healthy product backlog for one or more pods.
  • Understands and documents business outcomes in features and user stories, writes and explains user stories to the agile team.
  • Prioritizes work items in the backlog based on customer value and business outcomes.
  • Articulates the user, needs, business outcome, and acceptance criteria for each user story.
  • Successfully translates solution requests into stated user or business needs.
  • Owns the 90-day plan and updates it regularly.
  • Understands and articulates the strategy to the agile team and leverages this strategy to ensure alignment between stakeholders and items in the backlog.
  • Collaborates on release plan goals.
  • Ensures scope for each release is clear, well communicated, and aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Approves work items as ready for release.
  • Possesses and provides authoritative knowledge on the system being developed and communicates impact of the changes.
  • May support up to two pods.
  • May act as a mentor to junior Product Owners or analysts.
  • Works with the delivery team and Scrum Master to remove impediments and works to identify long term improvements to recurring processes.
  • Participates in regular agile events.
  • Acts as the voice of the customer within the agile team, and maintains clear, bi-directional communication between business stakeholders, Digital Product Managers, and the agile teams.
  • Uses and supports agile delivery practices to consistently deliver, inspect, and adapt.
  • Ensures quality of features through facilitation and/or completion of user acceptance testing throughout the development process.
  • Approves readiness of feature through testing effort and clearly defined outcomes and acceptance criteria.
  • Regularly collaborates with stakeholders and Digital Product Manager to demo progress as work is completed.
  • Understands and incorporates non-functional improvements to the system and can articulate the value of these activities to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Collaborates regularly with Digital Product Manager and stakeholders to interpret and execute the product roadmap and understand where customer value can be maximized.
  • Understands the needs of the end user and/or customer and acts as a proxy for the development team.
  • Collaborates with Product Management and user research teams as needed to understand, amplify, and represent customer needs.
  • Communicates outcomes and business context to the agile team, providing guidance and clarification on user stories.
  • Sets the goal of each sprint.
  • Communicates status, including progress toward stated outcomes and release detail to business stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Collaborates with other agile teams to identify, track, mitigate, and communicate dependencies.
  • Utilizes learning events and online learning opportunities to develop and enhance core competencies related to the role and shares learnings with others.
  • Commits to continued self-learning of Agile, promotes standardized repeatable processes for agile team, observes, listens, evaluates, provides feedback to agile team.
