About The Position

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector is hiring a Sr. Principal GNC Engineer – Flying Qualities (Level 4) to join our Vehicle Engineering team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Melbourne, Florida. In this role, you will design, develop, and test advanced guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) algorithms and software to meet air vehicle flying qualities and stability requirements. You will develop dynamic simulation models, support flight test activities, and provide technical expertise during design reviews and program milestone events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline with 8 years of relevant experience; OR Master of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline with 6 years of relevant experience; OR PhD in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline with 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Active US Government Secret clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Top Secret clearance within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs, with an Interim Top Secret clearance required prior to start.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance, within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs.
  • Experience supporting airworthiness assessments for aircraft flying qualities, stability, and/or control.
  • Experience on multi-disciplinary GNC engineers on a development program.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, and/or autocoding Simulink models.
  • Experience in supplier/customer relationship management, including briefing, coordinating, and/or following up.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for all positions with a government clearance and certain other restricted positions.

Nice To Haves

  • Active US Government Top Secret clearance or higher (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
  • Knowledge of C/C++, Java, Python.
  • Knowledgeable in the area of flight sciences, control law development, and control system analysis.
  • Experience writing/reviewing technical documents: CDRLS, SSOWs, SRDs, ICDs, SDRL reviews, etc.
  • Experience leading/coordinating as focal point with supplier and customer/government (Hosting recurring meetings, arranging TIMs, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, verify and test algorithms, software and simulation tools to perform guidance, navigation and control (GNC).
  • Develop control laws to meet air vehicle performance, flying qualities and stability margin requirements, both on ground and in flight.
  • Develop air vehicle system linear and non-linear dynamic simulation models and integrate models into software and hardware-in-the-loop simulation environments.
  • Develop analysis to support design reviews at different stages in a development program, such as PDR, CDR, etc.
  • Analyze air vehicle flight test data and support flight test activities.
  • Attend or present at internal program, customer and/or supplier technical exchange meetings and/or formal program milestone reviews to provide and/or obtain progress status updates.
