Sr. Principal Engineer Systems

Northrop Grumman•San Diego, CA
•$142,200 - $213,400

About The Position

Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses span all levels of a total system product and its lifecycle, including concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal. Ensures customer or product requirements are systematically converted into total systems solutions that account for technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional and timeline analyses, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. The position supports development and maturation of a large program’s system-of-systems design, collaborating with program IPT counterparts, technical teams, stakeholders, and customers. It contributes to requirements development and management, performance analysis, model development, tool and team integration, change proposal development, and risk and opportunity analysis. The role also provides technical leadership, presents solutions to complex problems, and supports chief engineers in defect analysis and path forward development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline and 8 years of related professional or military experience, or a Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline and 6 years of related professional or military experience, or a STEM Ph.D. and 4 years of related professional or military experience.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret or higher clearance, with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrollment in Continuous Evaluation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and SysML, including creating and maintaining SysML models and using MBSE for requirements, design, and verification.
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS, Polarion, or equivalent, including requirements decomposition and traceability.
  • Experience with risk management methods such as FMEA, FTA, and risk registers, and applying risk-informed design decisions.
  • Experience developing system architectures and interface control documents and performing system-level trade studies.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering lifecycle processes, including the V-model, and standards such as the INCOSE SE Handbook.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to present complex technical material clearly.

Nice To Haves

  • Complete understanding and broad application of the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, integration, test, and verification.
  • General knowledge of related performance analysis techniques and disciplines.
  • Experience providing technical and program review board leadership and technical solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to independently determine and develop approaches to solutions under general direction.
  • Experience supporting chief engineers in defect analysis and developing paths forward.
  • Experience contributing to change proposal development and risk management and opportunity analysis.
  • Experience with frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts and representing an organization on difficult technical issues.
  • Experience collaborating with program IPT counterparts on systems engineering and design analysis artifacts.
  • Experience developing and maturing system-of-systems designs for large programs.
  • Experience developing model techniques and processes for model, tool, and team integration and system performance analysis.
