Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • Sr. Engineer: 5+ years' experience required
  • Principal Engineer: 12+ years' experience required
  • Practical experience and/or education in Structural Engineering and Design, with emphasis on welded connection design and associated NDT requirements.
  • Knowledge of AISC Steel Construction, ASME B30 & BTH (Below the Hook) Codes and Standards.
  • Familiarity with different grades and types of steel, aluminum, and wood materials.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a time sensitive environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Strong leadership, self-confidence, and project management skills.
  • Standard computer skills including MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of structural analysis methods, both traditional hand calculations as well as Beam and 3D Mesh Finite Element Analysis.
  • This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance.
  • You must be a US Citizen for consideration and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference is given to experience in software tools including RISA, Mathcad, and FEMAP/Nastran.

Responsibilities

  • Champion and enforce BIW safety policies and procedures.
  • Promote a culture of proactive safety awareness and accountability across the team.
  • Ensure safe workplace conditions and compliance with government and company safety standards.
  • Champion BOS principles and productivity enhancements.
  • Identify and eliminate non-value-added activities; lead implementation of process improvements.
  • Leverage A3 problem-solving and other structured improvement tools.
  • Engineering of crane lifts and turns of ship components weighing in excess of 50 tons and of varying complexity.
  • Engineering of temporary ship support, as well as jigs, fixtures, lifting devices and custom tools used in the ship construction process.
  • Determination of lifting lug locations, temporary back up structure if required, welded connection details and non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements.
  • Working with heavy transportation equipment such as Self Propelled Modular Transporters, Shipyard Transporters, and our Ship Translation System.
  • Working with our design force to communicate lifting and handling information to the Trades.
  • Routinely interfacing with manufacturing personnel on the deck plates to provide guidance as necessary.
  • Participate in or lead technical interchanges on issues with customers such as U. S. Navy (NAVSEA and Supervisor of Shipbuilding), or others as required.
  • Work with other engineers in a manufacturing environment with emphasis on safely executing high quality work.
