JOB SUMMARY: Jabil is looking for an experienced Sr. Photonics Test Development Engineer to become part of its growing Test Engineering team. As a Test Development Engineer, you will be responsible for developing test solutions for photonics/optics products; including developing the test strategy and test plan, selecting/sourcing test equipment and test fixtures/hardware, developing the test automation software, and deploying the completed test solutions worldwide at Jabil manufacturing sites and/or design verification labs. You will work closely with customers and Jabil’s extended cross-functional teams (R&D, Manufacturing, Program Management, Quality) to deliver optimized manufacturing test solutions for both customer and Jabil-designed products. You will also support R&D in evaluating performance of early product releases. You will be a strong team player and play a critical member in defining future test strategies for the Photonics Test Engineering team at Jabil.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in the testing of photonics technology (devices, modules, line cards, shelves, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of English (both spoken and written).
  • Able to converse on technical topics in English, and to prepare and present reports in English.
  • Good understanding of fundamental optical concepts such as optical power, optical power loss/gain, optical wavelength/spectrum, polarization, polarization dependent loss, optical signal-to-noise ratio, etc.
  • Good understanding of key test and measurement concepts utilized in assessing the performance of optical transmitters, receivers and transceivers, such as bit error rate, eye diagram characterization, jitter, etc.
  • Experience with standard test equipment used for test and characterization of optical products, such as bit error rate testers, optical power meters, optical amplifiers, optical spectrum analyzers, wavelength meters, etc.
  • Experience developing software/test scripts using object-oriented software languages: Python (preferred), C++, etc.
  • Strong root cause analysis and troubleshooting skills.
  • Leader. Oversees and/or mentors others.
  • Works well within a team environment.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated and with strong desire of accountability and ownership.
  • Ability to develop project schedules, budgets and track projects to completion.
  • Compliance with Employee Health and Safety policies (EHS), and Corporate IT Security policy
  • Willingness to travel world-wide up to 20% of the time.
  • Fluent in use of standard Microsoft Office tools.
  • Electrical Engineering Degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years in photonics/optical test development in an R&D, EMS or OEM environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with testing photonic products with coherent optical technology.
  • Experience with testing pluggable transceivers, such as SFP, QSFP, CFP2/CFP4, etc.
  • Past development writing s/w used for test automation: Python, C++, C#, MATLAB, Test Stand, LabVIEW, C/C++, ATEasy, etc.
  • Experience with support of manufacturing sites, where optical products are built and tested.
  • Some experience with functional testing of PCBAs is desirable.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing test strategies for optical products.
  • Good understanding of the differences between manufacturing test and design verification test.
  • Experience in developing cost-effective test stations for volume manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize manufacturing test strategies for new and existing photonics products, including leading edge coherent optical products.
  • Develop manufacturing and/or design verification test plans for optimal test coverage, test time and cost efficiency.
  • Develop test capacity analyses for product demand forecasts provided by Sales/Business Managers.
  • Develop test hardware solutions including selection of test equipment and design of test fixtures/test PCBAs.
  • Develop test software solutions including test automation scripts, operator GUI and data analysis using software languages such as Python, C#, MATLAB, etc.
  • Verify test station operation, performance, stability and robustness.
  • Perform hands-on design verification testing (DVT) of prototypes in R&D labs when requested.
  • Maximize reuse of DVT software for subsequent manufacturing test solution.
  • Generate test documentation such as test plans, test hardware descriptions, test software requirements/descriptions, test equipment lists, test procedures, debug/troubleshooting manuals, training plans, etc.
  • Provide test/diagnostics training to technicians, test operators and other test engineers as required.
  • Support root cause analysis & troubleshooting activities on NPI and volume product in test.
  • Analyze test data to determine issues with product test performance and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in developing budgets, quoting new projects and estimating cost impact of change requests.
  • Collaborate with extended teams to develop project schedules and execute projects to completion.
  • Typically reports to Manager – Photonics Test Engineering.
  • On large projects, leads team of Test Development Engineers on Photonics Test Development Projects.
  • Coaches and guides other team members and participates in implementing best test engineering practices throughout the organization.
