About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and/or Team Leader, the Sr. Phlebotomist II independently performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on adult and pediatric patients. This role involves processing specimens, routing them for analysis, and performing clerical duties related to the laboratory computer system. Special assignments may include charge responsibility, training new employees, teaching students, and performing special projects. The Sr. Phlebotomist II is expected to supervise the section in the absence of a Manager or Team Leader and requires proficiency in the Epic computer system. Phlebotomists rotate weekends and holidays and may work at off-site locations as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to perform venipuncture accurately on patients who are difficult draws.
  • Interpersonal verbal and written English language skills sufficient to exchange information with patients, physicians, and other colleagues.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure and to handle the stress of high patient volume.
  • Ability to prioritize work to assure patient wait times are met and phlebotomy rounds are complete.
  • Ability to supervise daily activities in the absence of a manager.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance, instruction, and leadership to lower-level professional staff within area of expertise.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate problems and to effect corrective action procedures and modifications.
  • Basic computer skills. In the absence of these skills, demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards.
  • Five years of full-time phlebotomy experience with at least one year at LHMC.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a phlebotomy certification program with externship.
  • Additional certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares workspace and/or collection cart with essential supplies for efficient specimen procurement.
  • Greets patients, explains procedures professionally and courteously, and reassures patients.
  • Verifies patient identification according to LHMC policy for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Utilizes the Epic computer system to access appropriate encounters and enters required information, verifying and documenting patient demographics, orders, hours p.c., and last dose.
  • Ensures proper forms accompany specimens according to policy.
  • Cancels tests or defers draw times, documents information in the computer, and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Collects required insurance information from patients when necessary.
  • Uses other computer applications as necessary.
  • Performs proficient venipuncture according to NCCLS standards, including proper site preparation, technique, and use of collection devices/tubes.
  • Properly labels specimens in accordance with LHMC policy.
  • Delivers specimens within established time frames and follows special handling instructions.
  • Processes specimens for analysis according to written protocols.
  • Acts as a resource person, researches and investigates problems, and follows through with solutions.
  • Accepts, completes, and reports on special assignments.
  • Recognizes and assesses unreasonable patients, intervenes, and recommends solutions.
  • Consults with manager, team leader, or appropriate personnel.
  • Serves as an independent resource to colleagues, medical staff, and patients regarding collection protocols.
  • Takes a leading role in a major area of the department and acts as a resource person.
  • Performs in-charge responsibilities and reassigns daily tasks to ensure completion of workload.
  • Oversees the department in the absence of a manager.
  • Contributes new ideas and participates in changes within the department.
  • Contributes to department goals of optimization of resources and revenue enhancement.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels.
  • Incorporates LHMC Standards of Behavior and Mission Statement into daily activities.
  • Complies with all LHMC and department-specific policies.
  • Follows established safety procedures as stated in the Laboratory Safety and Infection Control Manuals.
  • Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and LHMC.
  • Establishes and maintains courteous and effective interactions with patients, physicians, management, visitors, and other members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to meeting and exceeding customer needs and adhering to customer service standards.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to stay current in scientific knowledge by completing 2 hours of continuing education per year.
