About The Position

The Sr Patent Agent will play a critical role in enabling therapeutic projects at multiple stages of the research and translational pipeline, helping to advance new treatments for neuro-degenerative diseases. They will also play a leader role in establishing and facilitating collaborative and innovative research partnerships between the University and outside businesses that have licensed University IP and have ongoing sponsored research at the University in the area of neuroscience-related cell-based therapeutics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a life science or chemistry required.
  • 5 years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Some expertise in and understanding of US and foreign patent laws and processes required.
  • Good writing skills, both narrative and technical required.
  • Solid background in cell and molecular biology, immunology or neurobiology required.
  • Must be admitted to, or have the ability to become admitted to, practice before the USPTO as a registered U.S. Patent Agent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. or J.D. preferred
  • Specialized experience related to drug/therapeutics commercialization preferred.
  • Understanding of the US and foreign therapeutics' approval processes preferred.
  • Experience or understanding the process of translating basic research discoveries into clinical programs, leading to commercialized products preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plays a critical role in enabling therapeutic projects at multiple stages of the research and translational pipeline.
  • Helps advance new treatments for neuro-degenerative and other diseases.
  • Establishes and facilitates collaborative and innovative research partnerships between the University and outside businesses that have licensed University Intellectual Property and have ongoing sponsored research at the University in any assigned area that has patentable intellectual property or commercialization prospect.
  • Acts as liaison with UR Ventures and outside patent counsel to ensure proper patent protection of cellular therapeutics. Includes monitoring new research, reporting new invention disclosures, and managing communications with both UR Ventures and outside counsel including patent prosecution and responses to US PTO.
  • Reviews of research findings, manuscripts and grant applications to identify potential patentable intellectual property.
  • Monitors funded projects, and documenting effort and funding of research deliverables.
  • Contributes to contract and sponsored research fulfillment by monitoring progress of project activities.
  • Develops project plans with activities, timeframes, resource requirements, milestones and deliverables for projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
