About The Position

The Sr Optical Coater will be responsible for the production of advanced optical components, including coatings, polished lenses, prisms, and mirrors. This role involves applying expertise to coat, polish, grind, and diamond-turn optical parts while maintaining strict quality and safety standards. The position requires interpreting manufacturing process plans, engineering drawings, and MIL specifications. The Sr Optical Coater will operate and maintain coating equipment for single- and multi-layer thin-film applications, ensuring repeatable thickness and optical performance. Responsibilities include performing visual inspections, metrology checks, documenting process parameters, troubleshooting coating defects, adjusting process variables, and implementing corrective actions. The role also involves supporting various shift schedules and collaborating with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift according to the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Experience using hand tools, or precision machining tools.
  • The ability to test parts to ensure they meet finished specifications.
  • The ability to clean all types of optical elements to specified optical specifications.
  • Must have the ability to read and follow written work instructions, schematics and engineering drawings and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Due to facility requirements, must be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with optics at the technician level is strongly desired.
  • Experience with optical alignment and optical metrology.
  • Experience with optical coating.
  • Experience with interferometers and spectrometers.
  • Experience working as an optician with CNC machines.
  • Familiarity with optical elements, lenses, rough and finish grind flats, mirrors, shop aids, test plates, and special shaped elements is desired.
  • Experience with controlling contours, thickness wedge and surface quality.
  • Experience with MIL-PRF-13830B and other related Optical MIL specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret manufacturing process plans, engineering drawings, and MIL specifications to perform coating, polishing, grinding, and diamond-turning of lenses, prisms, mirrors, shop aids and test plates.

  • Perform visual inspections, metrology checks, and document all process parameters and results in electronic tracking systems.
  • Troubleshoot coating defects, adjust process variables, and implement corrective actions to sustain quality and yield.
  • Support 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift schedules and collaborate with engineering, quality and manufacturing teams to drive continuous-improvement initiatives.
