About The Position

The customer is in the process of standardizing on a Cisco network and requires an experienced Network Administrator. The IT staff is currently learning and implementing network changes simultaneously, which is proving challenging. This role is on-site, preferably for someone in the Norfolk area. The administrator will be responsible for configuring and monitoring the network, developing documentation, and transferring knowledge to the ORF IT staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with Cisco networking technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, LAN/WAN, routing, switching, and network security.
  • Experience with Cisco IOS, NX-OS, and network management tools.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex network issues in enterprise environments.
  • Solid documentation skills and experience creating technical artifacts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and self-driven
  • Strong collaboration and mentoring abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Cisco certifications (CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE preferred).
  • Experience with network automation and scripting (Python, Ansible, etc.).
  • Familiarity with cloud networking (Azure, AWS) and hybrid environments.
  • Experience working in knowledge transfer or training-focused roles.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, deploy, and maintain Cisco-based network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems.
  • Monitor network performance, availability, and security using enterprise monitoring tools.
  • Troubleshoot network issues and outages, ensuring timely resolution with minimal downtime.
  • Perform regular system upgrades, patching, and firmware updates for Cisco devices.
  • Implement and manage VLANs, routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP), and network segmentation.
  • Maintain network security through proper configuration of firewalls, VPNs, and access controls.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and implement remediation measures.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory security standards.
  • Develop and maintain detailed network documentation including topology diagrams, configurations, SOPs, and operational runbooks.
  • Establish best practices for network management and operational procedures.
  • Ensure documentation is regularly updated and accessible to the IT team.
  • Provide structured knowledge transfer to ORF IT staff through training sessions, workshops, and hands-on demonstrations.
  • Mentor internal staff to build in-house networking capability and reduce external dependencies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional IT teams to support infrastructure projects and integrations.
  • Evaluate network performance and recommend improvements or upgrades.
  • Stay current with Cisco technologies, network trends, and industry best practices.
  • Support capacity planning and scalability initiatives.
