About The Position

This position is responsible for leading the Analytical Laboratory team within Manufacturing Quality Systems and Laboratory Operation. The analytical team encompasses a range of junior to senior level Scientists conducting physical and analytical chemistry analyses across ingredients, in-process and finished goods. This individual takes a lead role in facilitation and oversight of analytical chemistry workload supporting manufacturing operation, continuous improvement and research & development. The individual leads project assignments such as methods development, technical troubleshooting, partnering with R&D material characterization work, support of R&D product development projects, and oversight of key analytical and laboratory data management programs. Additionally this individual provides leadership development, coaching, support and guidance to the analytical and physical chemistry subject matter experts for the food safety & quality analytical and physical attributes control programs at global The Hershey Company manufacturing facilities and contract manufacturers.

Requirements

  • Requires analytical chemistry knowledge and food manufacturing laboratory expertise, strong leadership and coaching capability, project management discipline, technical troubleshooting skills, and the ability to partner cross-functionally.
  • Expertise in Good Laboratory Practices and Laboratory Data Management.
  • BS degree in chemistry plus 10+ years of applicable work experience, or MS degree in chemistry plus 7-9 years of applicable work experience, or Ph.D degree in chemistry plus 5 years of applicable work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Analytical Laboratory team, ensuring scientists and technicians deliver reliable testing support across ingredients, in-process materials, and finished goods.
  • Oversee analytical chemistry, physical testing, food safety verification, regulatory testing, instrumentation setup, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide technical expertise and project leadership for R&D, manufacturing, continuous improvement, and quality/regulatory initiatives.
  • Manage critical laboratory governance processes, including COA approvals, commodities approvals, analytical data management, and global lab support.
  • Build laboratory strategy and team capability through resource planning, technology advancement, personnel development, coaching, and operational coverage.
  • Team leadership scope: Leads up to 15 employees across scientist/technician roles and multiple job bands.
  • Testing volume scope: Oversees approximately 75,000 analyses tied to COA approvals, product quality, food safety, and regulatory verification.
  • Operational complexity scope: Coordinates approximately 80 testing workstations supporting numerous unique analytical chemistry, physical testing, instrumentation, troubleshooting, and laboratory governance activities.
