About The Position

SpaceX is seeking a Senior Mechanical Process Engineer for its Starlink PCB manufacturing operations. The engineer will develop and implement the equipment, facilities, tooling, and manufacturing process technologies needed to scale printed circuit board production to high volumes. The role owns projects from conception and factory design through machine installation, commissioning, factory ramp, and process optimization. The engineer will develop and run hands-on process Design of Experiments (DOE), optimize complex mechanical and chemical process equipment, investigate manufacturing defects and emergent production issues, and work with a small team of engineers and technicians to activate and test machines. The position also develops project plans, budgets, and cost/benefit analyses and interacts with senior leadership during critical design phases. The work supports production of consumer-facing Starlink devices at the Bastrop factory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • At least 3 years of experience with fluids, mechanical or electromechanical design, and/or analysis; internship or project-team experience is applicable.
  • Willingness to travel to other SpaceX sites and/or vendors, potentially for extended periods and internationally.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. unassisted.
  • Ability to perform duties involving lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying.
  • Willingness to work onsite; remote work is not considered.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. export-control eligibility requirements: U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on project experience with complex fluid- or mechanical-based production systems in a professional setting, preferably as a lead.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in design and analysis.
  • Experience taking products from research and development into production.
  • Experience with PCB manufacturing processes such as metal plating, chemical etching, CNC drilling equipment, lamination presses, or cleanroom equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain new or improved manufacturing processes, equipment, technologies, and facilities.
  • Analyze production processes and machinery using a first-principles, physics-based approach.
  • Lead Design of Experiments to establish stable, robust processes that can be handed off to production personnel.
  • Perform defect characterization and analysis to determine root causes and develop yield-improvement action plans.
  • Develop project plans, budgets, and cost/benefit analyses for implementing new processes or machines.
  • Own and perform machine activation and testing with a small team of engineers and technicians.
  • Resolve technical and emergent manufacturing issues involving part quality, machine reliability, and process stability.
