Position Summary: Airbus U.S. is looking for an enthusiastic and creative Sr. Mechanical Engineer to design and manage new satellite thermal systems. We're looking for candidates who can bring exceptional engineering skills and strong experience in aerospace programs to the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas.
  • A minimum of 8 years with a bachelor's degree, or 6 years with a master's degree.
  • Proven track-record of working with aerospace hardware and/or software systems, starting from conceptual designs and tradeoffs thru detailed design, development, manufacture, integration, test, deployment, and operations.
  • Proficient with Thermal Engineering tools such as Systema Thermica, SINDA, or Thermal Desktop.
  • Familiarity with elements of space mission architectures extending beyond the satellite platform – including launch, flight operations, mission CONOPS, user interfaces, etc.
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner effectively across multiple levels.
  • Be team-minded and ready to work in a multi-functional and multi-cultural, fast-moving and complex/technical environment.
  • Flexible attitude and strong initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas.
  • Active DoD security clearance at Secret or above highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of Airbus U.S.'s satellite systems with a focus on Thermal Control Subsystem (TCS) design.
  • Be involved in the full lifecycle of development, from requirements definition through operations.
  • Provide autonomous support of complex assignments, under the leadership of the Mechanical Engineering Manager.
  • Have project and subject matter responsibility and authority.
  • Perform thermal design and responsible engineering tasks for Airbus U.S. satellite systems, including the Arrow450 platform.
  • Design thermal control systems for new and heritage satellite systems. Including thermal radiators, multi-layer insulation (MLI), heat pipes, heaters, temperature sensors, etc.
  • Implement thermal design changes required to support new thermal hardware development and mission-specific thermal designs.
  • Own full thermal hardware development cycle, including defining system requirements, vendor technical management, unit qualification, satellite integration, system validation, and on-orbit operations.
  • Develop thermal test plans and support thermal vacuum (TVAC) testing, including test hardware procurement, test design and setup, and test execution.
  • Support flight software development and validation related to the electronic active thermal control system of the spacecraft.
  • Develop thermal models and perform thermal analysis at the spacecraft unit and system level.
  • Drive multiple design activities (programs or mission) – could lead to spacecraft, payload, satellite bus, and/or launch integration activities.
  • Participate in cross-functional planning, coordination, and task execution situations involving the full spectrum of engineering and integration activities.
  • Support Airbus spacecraft development product roadmap; includes design adjustments, schedule, and cost targets aligned for future business captures.
  • Support the definition of spacecraft customization process for customer mission needs.
  • Perform all the necessary mechanical system engineering activities to build, to maintain and to evolve the Airbus spacecraft products.
  • Promote and optimize cost savings by reuse of the heritage platform designs and manufacturing infrastructures in the pursuit of various constellation prospects.
