About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. This role involves working on challenging problems within a diverse team of engineers and specialists. The position offers an opportunity to merge expertise in HVAC and plumbing design with next-generation data center design, influencing construction on a global scale. The role will influence all aspects of Mechanical design, construction, operations, and maintenance for global data centers, including fire suppression, detection, alarm, and mass notification systems, as well as fire-resistant construction and life safety. The engineer will collaborate with internal and external teams to define, design, detail, and document Mechanical features using prescriptive and performance-based approaches, ensuring the protection of people and uninterrupted customer data. A key aspect of the role is contributing to the continual improvement of Mechanical design standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering
  • Cumulative 10+ years of experience in design engineering or the construction industry, related to all aspects of Mechanical, including hydronics, air side duct design, and plumbing design
  • Experience applying local codes, International Code Council (ICC) requirements, and other Mechanical industry standards, procedures, and methodologies.
  • Experience with processes of design review, specification, development of design standards, and submittal review.
  • Ability to read and understand construction documents for all trades (design drawings, control diagrams, specifications, etc.).
  • United States Citizenship Required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience authoring white papers, technical documentation, and training materials
  • Experience directly related to construction of data centers, critical medical, industrial, construction, oil and gas, or large-scale mechanical and power systems.
  • Experience in the development processes for codes and standards
  • Experience with performance-based alternatives to prescriptive Mechanical design.
  • Professional Engineering license, NCEES Record
  • Experience directly related to the design or construction of data centers or critical infrastructure or large-scale mechanical and electrical plants

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee project-related work, such as water supply analysis and design for fire water service to buildings, including coordination with utilities and fire officials.
  • Coordinate Mechanical system space requirements, supporting utilities, and equipment locations.
  • Provide detailed construction specifications for all Mechanical-related trades.
  • Prepare detailed designs for HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems.
  • Review all design disciplines to ensure they meet code requirements described in design standards.
  • Oversee and review work performed by others, and in some cases, perform the work yourself.
  • Ensure contractors have the necessary information to build data centers as expected.
  • Ensure operations teams are well-equipped to operate and maintain data centers.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders, including design, construction, commissioning, operations, vendors, and service providers, as well as local building and fire officials.
  • Drive improvement of design standards and project approaches across the organization.
  • Review designs in progress with internal and external design teams to ensure they meet established design standards, local code requirements, and AHJ requirements.
  • Provide high-quality Mechanical engineering advice on a wide variety of projects globally while working with local engineering teams to achieve alignment of designs and design objectives.
  • Coordinate with construction, commissioning, and risk management teams to answer requests for information and value engineering queries.
  • Be responsible for construction documents, code compliance, design and installation standards, water supply evaluation and assessment, testing, inspections, and submittal review.
