About The Position

The American Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a Sr. Learning Experience Designer to join their Mission Operations team. This hybrid role, based in Chicago, IL, requires three days a week in the office. The primary focus is to design and execute high-quality, interactive experiences that foster meaningful dialogue, shared learning, and collective sensemaking around organizational well-being. This involves working with both large convenings and 1:1 advisory engagements with health systems. The role also involves partnering with physician faculty to enhance facilitation skills across convening and advisory services. The Sr. Learning Experience Designer is responsible for applying expertise in conversation design, session flow, and group dynamics, and assisting subject-matter experts in translating insights into impactful, participant-centered experiences at various scales. This position requires a deep understanding of the job discipline and foundational knowledge of related disciplines, enabling the individual to solve complex problems independently with minimal supervision. The role may lead specific workstreams within larger projects or manage ongoing activities and objectives, often serving as a mentor to less experienced colleagues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5+ years of experience in designing, leading, and/or supporting interactive experiences with senior leader audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in translating subject-matter content into interactive experience designs and conversations to support meaningful dialogue and learning.
  • Strong facilitation design capability, including experience crafting conversation formats, session flows, and interactive elements aligned to clear learning or strategic objectives.
  • Ability to work effectively with subject-matter experts, conducting intake and preparation to convert expertise into facilitation guides, slide decks, and participant-centered experiences.
  • Demonstrated skill at training and preparing presenters or facilitators to strengthen delivery, engagement, and alignment with intended outcomes, as well as giving direct, constructive feedback.
  • Experience designing facilitation assets and reusable tools (e.g., guides, prompts, decks, conversation supports) that enable others to deliver consistently high-quality experiences.
  • Comfortable working across formats, including large convenings, small-group sessions, and 1:1 advisory or consultative conversations.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with experience partnering with diverse stakeholders (i.e., events, operations, or production teams) to ensure logistical execution supports.
  • Ability to observe group dynamics and make real-time or iterative adjustments to facilitation design, pacing, and flow to support engagement and outcomes.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Overnight travel to US-based locations multiple times per year required.

Responsibilities

  • Define the purpose, learning outcomes, conversation formats, and content arc for AMA's well-being convening events (excluding those owned by Content Strategy & Operations).
  • Research and design interactive formats that encourage deep participation, dialogue, reflection, and learning among diverse senior physician and health system leaders.
  • Translate content and intent into facilitation guides, session flows, and participant experiences.
  • Continuously improve convening approaches based on feedback, observed group dynamics, and emerging facilitation techniques.
  • Develop a general understanding of health systems, clinician well-being, change leadership, and clinical audiences to inform experience design, facilitation, session flow, and materials.
  • Create, curate, and organize a library of facilitation guides, prompts, techniques, teaching decks, and conversation supports for physician faculty and program teams.
  • Partner with physician faculty and the Activation Director to customize reusable facilitation materials and conversation supports.
  • Coach and prepare physician faculty and other presenters to enhance their facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Design and lead preparation and rehearsal sessions to align presenters on intent, flow, and facilitation approach.
  • Provide input to event planning and operations staff to ensure logistics support experience and learning objectives.
  • Define and build the run of show for each presenter's section, including session flow, interaction design, timing, and transitions.
  • Serve as the on-site facilitation and experience lead during convening events, monitoring energy, pacing, and group dynamics, and coordinating real-time adjustments.
  • Ensure consistent and improving facilitation quality across formats by collecting feedback and identifying opportunities for enhancement.
