Requirements

  • High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
  • Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII): Required

Responsibilities

  • Collects and distributes specimens in an inpatient setting.
  • Supports laboratory including specimen ordering, processing and preparation for testing.
  • Monitors specimens for send out to reference laboratory.
  • Facilitates billing of lab charges, reports distribution and coordinates outside clinical training.
  • Acts as resource for other staff members.
  • Is responsible for a variety of technical tasks in the laboratory and performs other administrative tasks, as needed.
  • Interacts with Laboratory Information System for data entry, report recovery, and report distribution in inpatient setting.
  • Enters the billing information into Hospital Information System.
  • Processes laboratory orders for billing.
  • Prepares laboratory reports and distribute to ordering individual.
  • Collects, processes, and preserves specimens in inpatient settings.
  • Performs clerical duties to process and report test results.
  • Prioritize based on order status (STAT, ASAP, routine).
  • Communicates effectively with other departments and staff, including physicians and their offices to facilitate the flow and quality.
  • Processes and maintains records of specimens sent to reference labs.
  • Assists in inventory management including ordering supplies and stocking supplies.
  • Performs billing duties which may include running reports, and responding to biller requests.
  • Completes microbiology pre-analytical procedures and documentation for laboratory testing according to laboratory policies including quality control standards, calibrations, and documentation.
  • Documents quality control, calibration and test results.
  • Assists Clinical Lab Scientist with operation of instrumentation.
  • Consults with a clinical laboratory scientist or phlebotomy supervisor when difficulties are encountered in phlebotomy, test selection, or specimen processing.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
