About The Position

Apex Companies is seeking a part-time Senior Hazardous Waste and Environmental Safety Specialist for a national aerospace manufacturer client in Portland, Oregon. This role will provide expertise in hazardous waste and environmental compliance operations, working closely with environmental, engineering, maintenance, leadership, and EHS stakeholders. The specialist will support day-to-day operations and assist in closing compliance gaps. The position is part-time, with up to 40 hours per week, and is dedicated to supporting the client's hazardous waste and environmental compliance needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental, waste management, chemical or a related technical discipline required.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive hazardous waste and or waste management, engineering, environmental/hazardous waste compliance.
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Reasonable computer skills (data entry, email, able to pick up basic operations on the client’s internal data base and programs).
  • Excellent communication, training, technical writing, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and standard safety documentation and reporting practices.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Oregon’s Dangerous and Hazardous Waste regulations.
  • Familiarity with EPA hazardous and dangerous waste regulations.
  • Familiarity with related records (manifests, hazardous waste invoices, MSD, etc.).
  • DOT trained.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
  • Certified Professional in Waste Management (CPWM).
  • Hazardous Waste Management Specialist (HMS).
  • Ability to give small presentations is desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overarching Hazardous Waste and Environmental Safety expertise to a national aerospace manufacturer.
  • Support site-wide hazardous waste and environmental compliance operations.
  • Work closely with environmental, engineering, maintenance, leadership, and EHS stakeholders.
  • Assist with closing hazardous waste and compliance gaps.
  • Support day-to-day hazardous waste and environmental compliance operations.
  • Conduct walking inspections of RCRA accumulation/satellite areas.
  • Document and photograph areas of concern, and develop professional emails to convey desired mitigation.
  • Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure corrective measures were implemented.
  • Perform Factory Dust Disposal Project tasks including sampling and tracking locations & disposal requests.
  • Conduct Site Inspections – Small Quantity Generators.
  • Provide support for Land Disposal Restrictions - Review/Update Project.
  • Update Battery Collection Locations with HazMat information.
  • Compile and organize RCRA Inspection Forms.
  • Review and approve invoices.
  • Assist in developing a mini training program on regulatory compliance and policies for Hazmat ECTs HW.
  • Visit crew meetings to train individuals or very small groups on policies, program aspects, compliance, etc.
