MK1 Lunar Lander Sr. GN&C Hardware Engineer

Blue Origin•Space Coast, FL

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Moon landers and related products. As a member of the spacecraft development team, the engineer contributes to hardware engineering for the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) subsystem and its components. The work includes developing navigation hardware requirements, conducting performance, reliability, and configuration trade studies, and supporting hardware integration, test installation alignment, and verification compliance throughout the program lifecycle. The engineer collaborates with vehicle systems engineering, mechanical design, mission operations, AI&T, and dynamics teams to coordinate designs and meet vehicle performance deliverables. Clear and concise verbal and written technical communication, technical expertise, leadership, quality commitment, and passion for the company’s mission are expected. Travel may be required up to 25%.

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. and confirmed experience in engineering or a related field; preference for aerospace or electrical engineering.
  • Validated experience with one or more GN&C hardware types: inertial navigation units (gyros and accelerometers), GPS receivers, navigation cameras, star-trackers, lidars, or EO/IR sensors.
  • Experience leading integration and test support activities in cleanroom environments, including optical surface contamination control and inspection standards.
  • Operational knowledge of inertial and relative navigation sensors.
  • Demonstrated experience in verification and test of navigation systems.
  • Proficiency in creating avionics requirements, procurement specifications, and statements of work.
  • Experience with spacecraft avionics communications protocols such as RS-422 or SpaceWire.
  • Deep working knowledge of IPC Class 3 Space Addendum Standards.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Up to 25% travel expectation.
  • Applicants must meet applicable U.S. export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience developing spacecraft GN&C systems or spacecraft avionics systems.
  • Experience in sensor procurement.
  • Experience designing, building, testing, or flying space vehicles.
  • Knowledge of planetary spacecraft navigation development.
  • Experience in spaceflight avionics.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop simulation.
  • Experience in flight testing spacecraft navigation or avionics.
  • Experience with radiation testing and analysis, including cumulative dose damage and single event effects.
  • Experience with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing.
  • Experience with alignment metrology, including position and orientation measurements.
  • Experience with laboratory test equipment such as power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience generating interface control drawings (ICDs) using CAD software.
  • Proven systems engineering and configuration leadership skills.
  • Experience with Windchill, Jama, and DOORS Next Generation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop navigation hardware requirements from system-level specifications, flow them down to subsystem and component levels, and define companion verification methods.
  • Support navigation hardware configuration design through design studies and performance trades.
  • Contribute to procurement, vendor coordination, delivery, acceptance, installation, verification, validation, qualification, and certification of navigation hardware.
  • Guide and perform testing and analyses, including flight, thermal vacuum, and vibration tests, to validate system specifications and requirements and establish sensor performance specifications.
  • Support the navigation hardware test and verification campaign.
  • Support development and execution of component-level navigation test programs, including sensor characterization, sensor modeling, and integrated on-vehicle testing.
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, on-vehicle functional testing, and flight testing.
  • Coordinate design work with vehicle systems engineering, mechanical design, mission operations, AI&T, and dynamics teams.
  • Communicate technical information clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
