The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit. Blue Origin is seeking an experienced Sr. FPGA Firmware Developer to join our COMSEC team within the Core Systems and Components group. In this role, you will play a critical part in designing, developing, and verifying FPGA firmware for secure communications systems. You will work closely with our Electrical Hardware Design and Systems Engineering teams to deliver robust, high-performance solutions in support of Blue Origin's mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in FPGA firmware development
  • Proficiency in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog
  • Experience with FPGA toolchains (Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of digital design principles, timing constraints, and verification methodologies
  • Working knowledge of AXI bus implementations
  • Experience working with hardware design teams and interpreting schematics
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Active Top Secret security clearance strongly preferred
  • Experience in COMSEC, cryptographic systems, or secure communications
  • Exposure to zero-trust security architecture principles and implementation
  • Familiarity with high-speed serial interfaces (PCIe, SpaceWire, Ethernet, etc.)
  • Experience with DO-254 or other hardware development assurance standards
  • Knowledge of embedded systems and hardware/firmware co-design

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, simulate, and verify FPGA firmware for COMSEC applications
  • Collaborate closely with circuit designers and embedded developers throughout the full development lifecycle
  • Define and document firmware architecture, requirements, and interfaces
  • Perform FPGA synthesis, place-and-route, and timing analysis
  • Support hardware bring-up, integration, and testing activities
  • Troubleshoot and debug firmware issues in lab and field environments
  • Contribute to design reviews and technical documentation
