About The Position

Amazon Web Services is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join a global engineering team responsible for the design and continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint. Engineers at Amazon design resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution systems and are responsible for achieving world-class uptime for customers. They justify and communicate technical decisions to senior management and drive continuous advancements and improvements in their designs. This role offers the ability to drive change and define/design systems that customers rely on. Engineers need hands-on electrical design experience, understanding of critical data center equipment needs, and constructability of designs. Responsibilities include taking designs from concept to permit and construction documents, defining critical equipment specifications, approving equipment submittals, supporting construction from site selection through commissioning and turnover, and serving as a subject matter expert. The company highly supports continued learning and employee development. Teamwork is essential, requiring collaboration with internal and external groups, including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors. The position is based in Virginia, with up to 20% travel required to Amazon's head office in Seattle, data centers in Virginia, and for in-person collaborations. International support and some international travel may be necessary for working on international teams and developing design packages, though understanding international electrical design requirements is helpful but not necessary.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience
  • 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Experience in data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
  • An understanding of international electrical design requirements

Responsibilities

  • Data center electrical designs and collaboration with other disciplines to create a construction document set.
  • Creation of designs which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements.
  • Work with local agencies having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approval of equipment submittals.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during construction phases.
  • Work with commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations, electrical systems audits, and startup as needed.
