About The Position

This role will lead the day-to-day implementation and maintenance of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security/Emergency Response programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. As the EHS&S Specialist with expertise in chemical safety and Industrial Hygiene, you will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of critical health, safety, and hazardous materials (chemical and biological) safety programs to mitigate key risks to the site. This position will serve as the primary site SME for chemical safety and Industrial Hygiene, including the development and oversight of the future Hazardous Materials Emergency Response team. Additionally, you will support the site and assigned value streams in general/industrial safety needs, championing EHS principles across the site and collaborating with management and staff to continuously enhance EHS performance. You will partner with site and regional teams to keep people safe and protect the environment. You will lead EHS assessments, guide risk reduction plans, and support compliance with laws and company standards. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 + years of experience in the EHS&S field with progressive roles and responsibilities, including managing and executing EHS programs.
  • Experience must include time in a facility EHS role as well as specific work experience related to chemical safety and Industrial Hygiene with hands-on experience in Environment, Health and Safety roles.
  • Experience with and strong knowledge of OSHA safety and health regulations in general industry (29 CFR Part 1910) and a working knowledge of construction (29 CFR Part 1926).
  • Specific knowledge related to regulatory guidelines and standards impacting work with chemical and biological hazardous materials (e.g., OSHA 1910 Subpart Z - Toxic and Hazardous Substances) is expected.
  • Strong technical knowledge of risk management and safety principles in chemical and biological safety.
  • Strong working knowledge of Industrial Hygiene principles, including assessing risk, developing monitoring strategies, interpreting data, and recommending control measures.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation, and management of programs related to high risk/high hazard management, risk assessments and control, processes and hazardous agents (chemical/biological), security, and emergency response.
  • Proficient understanding of relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, as well as company-specific emergency response standards, to ensure all activities align with requirements.
  • Professional certification (either a CSP or CIH) and if not currently certified, the candidate must have the ability to become certified within 2 years of date of hire.
  • Obtaining and maintaining either a CSP or CIH certification is a requirement of this position.
  • Member of relevant professional EHS institution in order to stay current in the field.
  • Chemical, laboratory, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, or similar regulatory manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with EHS risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective action management.
  • Working knowledge of relevant U.S. federal and state EHS regulations (for example OSHA, EPA).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear reporting and team engagement.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
  • Experience in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotech, or manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead risk assessments, investigations, and corrective actions to reduce hazards and prevent reoccurrence.
  • Provide day-to-day EHS advice to site leaders, project teams, and contractors.
  • Support and maintain the EHS management system to ensure legal and company standard compliance.
  • Deliver training and communications to build EHS capability and awareness across the site.
  • Review projects and changes to identify EHS impacts and drive practical controls into design.
  • Monitor performance, prepare clear reports, and support governance forums that keep EHS issues visible and resolved.
  • Assess chemical and biological hazard risks from new and existing materials and processes, evaluate the effectiveness of existing exposure controls, and advise on different control methodologies.
  • Conduct Industrial Hygiene monitoring, analyze results, issue reports, and manage site plans, including exposure monitoring/modeling and the chemical safety program.
  • Integrate Industrial Hygiene considerations into capital and minor works projects and effectively identify and manage risks through technical innovation and support.
  • Evaluate compliance with federal, state, and local legislation and GSK requirements related to EHS&S, interpret requirements, and provide recommendations for compliance.
  • Perform program audits, facility inspections, and generate recommended corrective actions.
  • Manage key health and safety risks to GSK personnel, contractors, visitors, and the company’s reputation with regulators and the public.
  • Implement EHS&S programs at the Marietta site, verify their effectiveness, and ensure proper identification and mitigation of hazards and risks.
  • Ensure GSK standards are embedded into the project and operations to mitigate key risks for the site.
  • Implement EHS&S Management Systems for health, safety, environment, and security regulations and requirements.
  • Oversee the formation and management of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), including team member selection, equipment procurement and maintenance, and targeted training for efficient emergency handling.
  • Direct ERT operations, conduct routine equipment inspections, and coordinate skill-building exercises to ensure team preparedness for industrial incidents.
  • Develop, conduct, and evaluate training on EHS&S programs and processes, including training area supervisors and staff to identify hazards and conduct inspections.
  • Recommend and develop specific safety improvement plans and programs based on trend analysis and EHS&S performance.
