About The Position

The Sr. Director of Software Engineering leads the engineering strategy and transformation of NEXiA On-Premise program, overseeing $2M+ annual budgets, multiple development teams (including development partners), and delivering deployed solutions across different customer segments. This leader has previously re-tooled engineering organizations, improving code quality, reliability, and delivery predictability, while keeping the business moving. This is an execution-heavy leadership role. The initial focus is on team effectiveness, delivery discipline, and operational stability.

Requirements

  • 12+ years in software engineering, including senior leadership roles.
  • Proven experience leading enterprise software teams delivering customer‑deployed, on‑prem, or hybrid solutions.
  • Demonstrated success re‑tooling engineering organizations, including: Improving code quality and architectural discipline; Introducing structured release, branching, and testing practices.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise software lifecycle challenges: Patching, upgrades, long‑term support, and customer‑specific configurations.
  • Strong engineering judgment — knows when to build it “right” vs. “right now.”
  • Excellent communication skills across engineering, product, and executive stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in healthcare technology, especially in large‑scale medication fulfillment and dispensing environments.

  • Department of Defense (DoD) IT or FDA experience with strong understanding of security, compliance, and operational requirements in regulated settings.

Responsibilities

  • Owns the engineering strategy and execution for customer‑deployed, multitenant architectures (client/server or application/database) across enterprise customers.
  • Establishes and enforces enterprise‑level engineering practices, including: Resilient coding standards, Defensive programming and fault isolation, Backward compatibility, Upgrade‑safe design.
  • Leads release management for on‑prem and customer‑site deployments, including: Branching strategies, patch releases, hotfixes, and long‑lived customer versions; Regression testing and release validation across multiple customer configurations.
  • Ensures high‑quality integration with third‑party devices and external systems (version compatibility, failure recovery).
  • Partners with Product, Quality, and Commercial leaders to align technical strategy with business outcomes, ensuring engineering investments support growth, compliance, and customer value.
  • Recruits, mentors, and develops engineering leaders (managers and senior ICs).
  • Champions the adoption of generative AI across engineering and quality functions.
  • Focuses on measurable improvements in: Developer productivity, Testing effectiveness, Defect prevention, Operational efficiency.
  • Prioritizes real‑world impact over experimentation or buzzwords.
  • Builds and mentors high‑performing, globally distributed engineering teams.
  • Establishes clear leadership structures, predictable delivery models, and a culture of innovation and accountability.
  • Develops leadership depth and succession plans to reduce single points of failure.
  • Oversees the deployment and management of complex, high‑availability systems to ensure reliability and performance at scale.
  • Works effectively with C‑level executives and executive‑level customers, translating technical strategy into business impact and fostering trusted relationships at senior levels.
  • Develops and executes multi‑year technology roadmaps.
  • Identifies and sequences modernization efforts that reduce risk without stalling delivery.
  • Monitors industry trends and emerging technologies to inform strategic decisions.
