About The Position

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc. When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it. You’ll build and deploy against one of the most unique data foundations—over 1.6 million connected assets generating real-world data daily. These data and platform capabilities are enabling the development of AI models, edge computing architectures, and software systems that scale across fleets, products, and industries. The result will be a new generation of machines that continuously learn, improve, and deliver performance at scale. The Simulation & Digital Twin Engineer will design, develop, and integrate simulation and visualization capabilities that support Caterpillar’s next‑generation digital twin, machine behavior modeling, and interactive 3D experiences. This role combines simulation engineering, real‑time visualization, and 3D scene‑building using NVIDIA Omniverse and modern C++/Python toolchains.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience developing digital twins or simulation with exposure to high‑fidelity modeling, physics‑based simulation, and real‑time visualization.
  • Experience in system‑level simulation and digital twin technologies.
  • Experience with NVIDIA Omniverse, including USD workflows, Omniverse Kit/Code, PhysX, or Omniverse‑based pipeline development.
  • Strong hands‑on programming skills in C++ and Python
  • Experience in validating simulation models and digital twins using test data correlation, scenario‑based testing, regression testing, and telematics/real‑world data.
  • Knowledge of 3D scene construction, rendering concepts, and UI development for real‑time visualization.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Knowledge of development tools and activities; ability to produce software products or systems in line with product requirements. Conducts walkthroughs and monitors effectiveness and quality of the development activities. Elaborates on multiple-development toolkits for traditional simulation and digital twins. Has participated in development of multiple or large digital twins development. Contrasts advantages and drawbacks of different development languages and tools. Estimates and monitors development costs based on functional and technical requirements. Provides consulting on both selection and utilization of developers' workbench tools.
  • Knowledge of software development life cycle; ability to use a structured methodology for delivering and managing new or enhanced software products to the marketplace.
  • Knowledge of software integration processes and functions; ability to design, develop and maintain interfaces and linkage to alternative platforms and software packages.
  • Knowledge of technical aspects of a software products; ability to design, configure and integrate technical aspects of software products.
  • Knowledge of software product testing; ability to design, plan, and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure software product quality and adherence to stated requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the simulation logic and behavioral models governing machine and system behavior.
  • Create high‑fidelity 3D models, scenes, and environments using NVIDIA Omniverse, USD, and Omniverse Kit‑based pipelines.
  • Develop and execute model validation and verification plans, ensuring digital twins are accurate and numerically stable.
  • Integrate simulation components with current Caterpillar models, data systems, and digital twin frameworks.
  • Contribute to toolchain and pipeline design, including scripting utilities, automated test frameworks, and modular code libraries.
  • Work hands‑on with multiple digital‑twin platforms, such as NVIDIA Omniverse (primary environment), CARLA, Siemens NX/Teamcenter/Plant Simulation, Dassault 3DEXPERIENCE, Ansys Twin Builder, or similar, Unity or Unreal Engine.
