Sr Design Engineer, Diesel Integrations - Corporate

Rogers Machinery Company•Portland, OR
•Onsite

About The Position

Rogers Machinery is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to lead the mechanical and system-level integration of diesel powerplants into its portable air compressor product line. The role owns engine-to-package design, including cooling, exhaust, fuel, and structural and enclosure integration, to ensure reliable field performance. This is a hands-on individual-contributor position that works closely with controls and electrical teams and operates under minimal supervision of the department manager. The engineer develops and validates integration layouts, verifies engine and compressor matching, designs thermal, vibration, sound-dampening, enclosure, sheet-metal, and structural solutions, and manages designs, schematics, validation, testing, bills of materials, compliance requirements, certification, and production release. The role also supports troubleshooting, production, field commissioning, retrofit and upgrade development, sales and service, cost estimation, and training. The engineer coordinates simultaneous sustaining and new-product projects and promotes integration best practices and standards. The position is on-site and may involve travel of up to 10% to job sites. Physical demands include exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25–50 pounds frequently, and 10–20 pounds constantly, as well as long periods sitting, standing, and working at a desk or computer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; BSME preferred.
  • At least 7 years of experience in diesel engine integration, off-highway or mobile equipment design, or related mechanical engineering.
  • Hands-on diesel engine experience, strongly preferred, particularly with Cummins.
  • Hands-on experience integrating diesel subsystems, including cooling, fuel, exhaust and aftertreatment, intake, lubrication, sheet metal, and component placement.
  • Strong understanding of diesel engine performance, duty cycles, and system-level operation.
  • Knowledge and experience with applicable DOT, environmental, UL, and emissions regulations, including EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V, and CARB.
  • Working understanding of diesel engine control and electrical systems sufficient to define high-level requirements and work effectively with controls and electrical engineers.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel up to 10% to job sites.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25–50 pounds frequently, and 10–20 pounds constantly.
  • Ability to work for long periods at a desk or computer and to stand and sit for long periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced 3D CAD modeling skills using CREO, Windchill, or equivalent, including assembly, detailed drawings, sheet-metal, and enclosure design.
  • Experience with portable, skid-mounted, or trailer-mounted diesel-driven equipment such as compressors, generators, or similar mobile industrial machinery.
  • Strong background in thermal, vibration, and acoustic system analysis, including exposure to hydraulic-driven cooling fan systems on legacy platforms.
  • Comfort joining a growing team and helping build design and release processes.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with a customer-first focus.
  • International exposure in Europe, Asia, or other global markets.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience with CAT or Volvo diesel engines.

Responsibilities

  • Define product scope based on sales orders, rough sketches, or verbal instructions.
  • Develop and validate engine-to-system integration layouts for portable air compressor packages, including cooling, intake, exhaust and aftertreatment, fuel, lubrication, and control systems.
  • Verify diesel engines are matched appropriately to compressors and driven equipment, considering power curves, duty cycles, load requirements, and environmental and field conditions.
  • Develop solutions for thermal management, vibration, and sound dampening, and conduct system-level analysis and verification.
  • Design and integrate enclosure, sheet-metal, and structural components that house and protect the diesel powerplant.
  • Develop and manage product designs, schematics, validation procedures, and testing.
  • Manage bills of materials, validation reports, and compliance requirements for diesel-powered products.
  • Collaborate with controls and electrical engineers to define engine, controls, and electrical requirements and integrate them into package designs.
  • Support and conduct system-level troubleshooting of engine operation within equipment, including load response, transient performance, and fault detection.
  • Lead design release, certification testing, and production release.
  • Coordinate and manage simultaneous sustaining and new-product development projects.
  • Define and promote best practices and standards for integrating diesel powerplants into portable industrial equipment.
  • Support production, field commissioning, and troubleshooting of diesel-powered installations.
  • Define retrofit kits, system upgrades, and modifications to support performance or lifecycle across the powerplant lineup.
  • Support sales, service, cost estimates, design consultation, and installations.
  • Identify alternate integration methods or components to reduce cost, lead time, or supply risk.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior team members and supporting departments.
