About The Position

The Data & AI Engineer at Balt is part of the Group Data division within the IT team and will provide data management solutions - and help evolve Balt's AI capabilities - to support the company's growth, particularly in the US. The Data & AI Engineer will help architect, build, and optimize data solutions for various business departments, while also exploring and introducing practical AI use cases as Balt's data and AI maturity grows. This role is as much about laying the groundwork for AI adoption as it is about hands-on data engineering.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of development experience with Snowflake and Talend Cloud
  • 5+ years of development experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI
  • 5+ years of expert-level SQL skills
  • Experience with Openflow and Python
  • Curiosity about and some exposure to AI/ML or GenAI tools (e.g., experimenting with LLMs, Copilot-style tools, or Snowflake Cortex) - no prior production AI experience required, but genuine interest and aptitude to learn is important
  • Strong communication skills - written, verbal, in-person, and remote
  • Strong presentation skills - able to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely, including non-technical stakeholders
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Data Engineer performing technical work such as setting up workflows, managing repositories, and managing data infrastructure
  • Technical degree or equivalent certification (degree in CS or related field, or relevant technical certifications)

  • Experience working in medical device and/or manufacturing industries a plus

Responsibilities

  • Gather requirements from various departments and identify necessary sources of data.
  • Plan a scalable architecture to support rapid growth in the US, accommodating new topics or solutions - including future AI use cases.
  • Implement technical solutions for data collection, transformation, storage, and display, in accordance with the defined architecture at the Group Data level.
  • Establish automated processes and ensure proper monitoring and operation of these processes.
  • Participate in defining and implementing the Group's data management strategy.
  • Promote this strategy to internal customers in the US.
  • Define the development platforms and tools to support this strategy.
  • Manage data lifecycle in accordance with defined policies.
  • Industrialize and automate data cleansing.
  • Support Key Users in using the data provided.
  • Implement and monitor safety rules for data exposure.
  • Identify practical, low-risk opportunities to apply AI (e.g., automation, forecasting, natural-language reporting, or GenAI-assisted analytics) to business problems.
  • Evaluate and pilot AI/ML tools and platforms that fit within Balt's existing Snowflake and Tableau ecosystem (e.g., Snowflake Cortex) before recommending broader adoption.
  • Prepare and structure data so it's AI-ready as the organization's AI capabilities mature.
  • Partner with business departments to test small-scale proofs of concept and help set realistic expectations about what AI can and can't do.
  • Help define early data governance and safety guardrails for any AI use cases as they're introduced.
  • Support and manage external service providers.
  • Maintain the Group's data environment in operational condition: ETL, Data Lake, MDM, etc.
  • Stay informed about industry and technology advancements in the data and AI fields and bring forward relevant ideas.
  • Write technical specifications as needed.
  • Present the status of ongoing actions to the IT team, users, or the Data Management Committee.
