About The Position

We are seeking a highly experienced Control Systems Engineer to serve as our internal Subject Matter Expert (SME) for natural gas power plant controls within the Data Center and Fuels organization. In this role, you will define and uphold the overarching control strategy and system architecture across large-scale generation assets, ensuring design intent is carried through execution and commissioning. You will act as the technical authority across internal stakeholders, EPC firms, and OEMs, guiding the integration of reciprocating engines, gas turbines, and balance-of-plant systems into cohesive, high-performing control environments. This role sits at the intersection of design and execution, ensuring control systems are implemented to meet performance, reliability, and operational requirements in the field. Success requires deep technical expertise in power generation, a strategic perspective on complex plant and microgrid control architectures, and the ability to lead across multiple large-scale capital projects simultaneously. This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect’s mission to accelerate the renewable energy transition by delivering high-performance, utility-scale energy infrastructure. The team partners cross-functionally across development, construction, and operations to design and execute complex energy projects at scale. Joining this team means working at the intersection of technical excellence and real-world impact, contributing to projects that demand precision, collaboration, and innovation.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of hands-on experience in control systems engineering within power generation or heavy industrial environments.
  • Proven success leading control system design and execution on large-scale capital projects exceeding $1B.
  • Deep expertise in natural gas power plant operations, including reciprocating engines, gas turbines, governor systems, and synchronization requirements.
  • Strong experience with DCS, PLCs, and OEM-specific control platforms (e.g., Woodward, GE Mark VIe, or similar systems).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience working across EPCs, OEMs, and multidisciplinary internal teams to deliver integrated system solutions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex control strategies for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to navigate multiple projects and priorities, shifting effectively between design, execution, and commissioning phases.
  • A forward-thinking mindset that supports integration of conventional generation with battery storage and other emerging technologies.
  • A collaborative, decisive approach and ownership mentality that will help you succeed in complex, fast-moving project environments.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own plant-wide control strategies and DCS/SCADA architectures for large-scale power generation assets.
  • Establish scalable, resilient system designs that support complex operational profiles and evolving grid requirements.
  • Guide development of advanced control logic, including automated load balancing, load shedding, and fast-start sequencing.
  • Oversee integration of OEM control systems, including reciprocating engines and gas turbines, into unified plant and microgrid control environments.
  • Ensure seamless communication and coordination between plant subsystems and external grid interfaces.
  • Validate system performance against dynamic response and operational requirements.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority for EPC firms, system integrators, and vendors across all control system scopes.
  • Review, redline, and approve critical engineering deliverables, including P&IDs, control narratives, cause-and-effect matrices, network architectures, and I/O lists.
  • Partner with OEMs to align packaged control systems with site-specific integration and performance expectations.
  • Lead control systems engineering across multiple concurrent large-scale capital projects, maintaining alignment with schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, civil, and commissioning teams to ensure cohesive system design and execution.
  • Translate complex technical strategies and risks into clear, actionable insights for project leaders and executive stakeholders.
