About The Position

Serve as an Instructor of Spanish at US Southern Command responsible for teaching Spanish at the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels in both a classroom setting and one-on-one. Organize command-sponsored cultural events and familiarization activities.

Requirements

Current SECRET security clearance. Be eligible for a Top Secret/Specialized Compartmented Information clearance.
Possess near-native proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening at Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Level 3 for Spanish and English. The ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in language education, linguistics, international relations or a related discipline.
At least 20 years’ experience as a Spanish instructor, 10 of which as part of a larger faculty or department.
A current Tourist Passport with an expiration date more than 6 months away.

Nice To Haves

Experience teaching at the Defense Language Institute or in an affiliated program using DLI curricula or techniques.
Experience teaching or training US military personnel in Spanish language.
A master’s degree or higher (or foreign equivalent) in language education, linguistics, international relations or a related discipline.
Experience serving as part of a military operational staff to include component or combatant commands
A fundamental understanding of Program Management Office operations and management.

Responsibilities

Plan and conduct Spanish language classes using a variety of teaching techniques to develop students’ listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.
Create and adapt training materials, integrate instructional technology, and use online learning resources to support independent study.
Administer weekly quizzes and formal assessments, provide informal feedback, and conduct monthly written progress reports to supervisors.
Adjust teaching methods to individual learning styles and professional needs and address any identified learning or performance issues.
Work with other instructors in a team-teaching or rotation format and collaborate on program-related matters under the guidance of supervisors.
Provide special assistance, homework correction, and grading as part of the daily teaching load.
Prepare detailed lesson plans aligned with DLIFLC’s teaching standards and the ILR/ACTFL proficiency frameworks.
Apply strategies for managing a diverse student body, including student-centered, project-based, and task-based instruction.
Maximize the use of instructional technology and online platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams, WebEx) for teaching and assessment.
Complete mandatory faculty development courses, including the Common Faculty Development Instructor Course and the DLIFLC Instructor Certification Course, to meet Army and DLIFLC teaching standards.
