Sr. Clinical Product Lead, AI & Product Office (MD, DO, NP, PA or RN) - Boston, MA or Remote

UnitedHealth Group•Boston, MA
•$159,300 - $273,200•Remote

About The Position

The Sr. Clinical Product Lead, AI & Product Office brings clinical judgment to the office's product team, helping the Chief AI & Product Officer (CAIPO) drive Optum Health's enterprise AI-enabled product strategy, Agenix solutions portfolio, and product capability agenda. This role designs alongside the team from the first conversation, defines what an AI-enabled product must get right clinically before it reaches patients and care teams, and brings the care teams of each local market into the work. This individual is accountable for whether what the team ships is clinically safe, clinically useful, and measured on outcomes that matter to patients, including whether each patient got the right care. This is a job for a clinician who builds. The team is just starting, and you will help build it and shape how it innovates, at the highest level. The office is small today, and that is by design: its leverage is the enterprise AI investment it drives across Optum Health. You will use AI tools in your own work, and you will help care teams use and build with them safely. The AI & Product Office is building a small, cross-functional product team: product management, engineering, product design, service design, deployment, and clinical, working alongside care team members from each local market team. The team embeds with a local Optum Health market team to find problems with the people who do the work, then design, build, deploy, and measure the products that fix them. What the team learns in the first market is written down as the method for the next one. You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Requirements

  • Licensed clinician (MD, DO, NP, PA, or RN) with direct patient care experience
  • 5+ years working on clinical product, clinical informatics, or health technology alongside product and engineering teams
  • Experience in the healthcare industry and/or within a large, complex, matrixed organization
  • Experience using AI tools in your own work today and have built with them: an agent, automation, or large language model tool you designed, built, and ran, at work or as a personal project
  • Experience defining clinical requirements or safety criteria for a technology product and seen it through to launch
  • Ability to work at the enterprise level and at a single market's level, and to tell which one a given decision belongs to
  • Proven solid writing skills: decisions, findings, and disagreements in this office are written down, so the writing is the work
  • Proven ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization, earning trust with practicing clinicians and care team members, and leading those who do not report to you
  • Working proficiency in the tools this office builds with GitHub and AI coding and agent tools
  • Experience working as a senior individual contributor: owns hard problems end to end, working across functions to deliver them

Nice To Haves

  • Board certification in clinical informatics, or equivalent informatics training
  • Active clinical practice alongside this role
  • Experience evaluating AI or machine learning systems for clinical use, including building evaluation sets
  • Experience in primary care, care coordination, or home and community care
  • Experience leading clinical education or training programs for large clinician groups
  • Experience with value-based care and quality measurement
  • Experience with health IT policy, standards, or governance bodies

Responsibilities

  • Work as a design partner on every build, from problem definition through launch, rather than as a reviewer at the end
  • Bring care team members from each local market team into the work: recruit them, run the clinical side of kaizen events and design sessions, and make sure their judgment shapes what gets built
  • Translate clinical workflows, care pathways, and care standards into requirements the team can build and test
  • Determine which clinical decisions belong to a single market and which belong to the enterprise, and design accordingly
  • Define, with product and engineering, what an AI feature must get right clinically, how it is measured, the bar it must clear before it reaches patients or care teams, and the bar it must clear before it takes on more autonomy
  • Build evaluation sets with care team members from the markets, review model and agent behavior against them, and decide when a result is good enough to ship
  • Take the clinical case for each product through Optum Health's AI review and governance process, and monitor clinical performance after launch
  • Partner with technology, data, security, legal, privacy, compliance, and other stakeholders so AI-enabled products are responsible, secure, and enterprise-ready
  • Work with the deployment manager on clinical readiness and training for each deployment, and bring what care teams see after launch back to the team
  • Help care teams across the markets use and build with AI tools safely, on a supported path: templates, evaluation bars, and a way to ship
  • Lead clinical education on AI in the markets the team works in: how to use what the team ships, and how to build with AI safely
  • Define the clinical and quality outcome measures for each product, such as access, time to care, and whether patients received clinically appropriate care, with baselines before launch
  • Write down what the team learns each week so it is reviewed on cadence and turned into decisions

Benefits

  • comprehensive benefits package
  • incentive and recognition programs
  • equity stock purchase
  • 401k contribution
