About The Position

Our Applied Bioinformatics Laboratory (ABiL) provides innovative, cutting-edge bioinformatics solutions to address a diverse set of experimental questions across a wide range of applications. We also offer workforce development training to enable client staff to implement novel solutions and utilize existing bioinformatics tools. Our ASRT Bioinformatics Team supports clients' research, molecular epidemiology, and molecular surveillance projects across government, industry, and academic institutions. The selected candidate will possess expertise in project management, client relations, and bioinformatics, including research, development, training, and the application of bioinformatics tools. This role involves translating client needs into specific analysis services, defining deliverables, and ensuring quality and timeliness of work. The position also includes leadership of a bioinformatics team, recruiting personnel, and conducting bioinformatics research and development to create cutting-edge solutions. Additionally, the role involves developing and delivering bioinformatics training modules for workforce development.

Requirements

PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics or Biology with at least 24 semester hours in mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or informatics.
Proficiency in the use of various whole genome sequence analysis tools.
Proficiency in the assembly, analysis, and annotation of genomic data from a variety of sequencing platforms (e.g., Illumina, 454, IonTorrent, PacBio).
Exceptional written and oral presentation skills and the ability to effectively convey information.
5-6 years of experience working as a bioinformatician with demonstrated solutions in peer-reviewed publications.
Demonstrated experience with Unix (BASH scripting).
Demonstrated experience with the use of a diverse range of bioinformatics software tools for NGS data analysis.
Demonstrated experience with coding in Perl and/or Python.
Demonstrated experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, Microsoft SQL server).
Demonstrated experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis.
Demonstrated experience leading bioinformatics-focused projects to completion, including management of group dynamics and client interactions.
Expertise in the underlying theory and application of a wide range of bioinformatics tools.
Ability to configure and maintain a Unix/Linux bioinformatics computing environment.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills for working in a fast-paced multidisciplinary team and interacting with clients and external partners.
Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft SharePoint.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States.

Demonstrated bioinformatics teaching experience.
Prior laboratory work involving the use of bioinformatics analysis tools to address a research question.
Ability to interface well with audiences of various technical and non-technical backgrounds.

Responsibilities

Engage with business development experts to grow the bioinformatics team through grants, contracts, and collaborative agreements.
Work directly with clients to translate their needs into specific analysis services and define analysis deliverables and timelines.
Ensure the quality and timeliness of all work performed by ABiL members.
Interface with collaborators, SMEs, and industry leaders to ensure project goals are met.
Provide leadership to bioinformaticians and software developers.
Manage project work on a day-to-day basis, assigning responsibilities and evaluating progress.
Identify, recruit, and evaluate potential personnel, including employees, contractors, and trainees.
Directly work with the bioinformatics core analysis team and collaborators/trainees.
Train ABiL team members on the state-of-the-art in bioinformatics and genome analysis.
Develop cutting-edge bioinformatics solutions for diverse experimental questions.
Conduct bioinformatics and genomics research with internal and external collaborators.
Identify additional partners for longer-term research projects and novel tool development.
Stay informed of the latest developments in the literature and offer innovative solutions.
Develop modular, reusable bioinformatics analysis pipeline components.
Ensure pipeline components represent the state-of-the-art, are appropriate for the task, and can be seamlessly integrated.
Function as an SME in the development of traditional and online training resources for ABiL's workforce development program.
Develop, deliver, and maintain modular training modules in bioinformatics and genomics.
Train and help skills development of collaborators/trainees.
Apply in-depth knowledge to design and implement bioinformatics solutions for various research areas.
Perform quality control, assembly, annotation, and analysis of prokaryotic and eukaryotic whole genome sequences.
Manage large bacterial genome sequence files and databases, including uploads to NCBI.
Function collaboratively as a member of the bioinformatics team to foster innovation.
Function as an instructor for the workforce development training program.
Effectively document all work practices.
Maintain high ethical standards in scientific research and development.
Abide by established professional norms/standards.
Engage with data of varying confidentiality levels.
Sign and adhere to confidentiality, non-disclosure, and intellectual property agreements.
