About The Position

This role is for a Sr. Associate General Counsel at BECU, a financial institution with a "people helping people" philosophy. The position is a critical leadership role focused on managing legal risk across vendor, technology, and strategic business partnerships. The Sr. Associate General Counsel will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, handling complex technology, SaaS, AI, and vendor contracting matters, while also supporting enterprise innovation and core banking regulatory issues. The role involves leading a team, establishing contracting standards, and modernizing legal service delivery. It offers an opportunity to shape BECU's approach to financial innovation and build the future of the legal function.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active Bar membership in good standing.
  • 10+ years of legal experience in a law firm, financial institution, fintech, regulatory agency, or combination thereof.
  • 5+ years management or leadership experience required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

  • Strong legal drafting, analytical, and issue-spotting capabilities.
  • Significant experience with SaaS and technology contracts, DPAs, and AI addendums.
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately balance legal risks against business initiatives.
  • Expertise in GLBA, CCPA, Open Banking, and other data privacy regulations
  • Capable of translating complex legal and regulatory concepts into clear, concise and actionable guidance.
  • Demonstrates strong interest in emerging technologies, evolving business models, and changing regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Strategic Legal Counsel: Deliver practical, business-focused contracting guidance to business leaders, risk management, compliance, government relations, and other key stakeholders to help the organization make informed decisions while managing risk in a rapidly evolving environment.
  • Lead Vendor & Commercial Contracting: Manage legal support for vendor agreements, ensuring contracts align with BECU's strategic objectives and risk framework.
  • Negotiate Technology and Other Agreements: Review, draft, and negotiate complex technology, SaaS, AI, and data privacy, and other commercial agreements.
  • Drive Contracting Excellence: Develop and maintain contract playbooks, templates, and standardized risk positions that create consistency, efficiency, and scalable contracting practices.
  • Support CLM Transformation: Partner with procurement, vendor management, and business stakeholders to advance the implementation and adoption of BECU's Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) platform and related process improvements.
  • Lead and Develop Teams: Coach, mentor, and develop BECU’s existing non-lawyer contract team while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team culture and driving operational excellence.
  • Manage Complex Legal Matters: Serve as a senior escalation resource for significant legal contracting issues.
  • Oversee Legal Contracting Operations: Support department leadership in legal operations, outside counsel management, policy development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Shape the Future of the Function: Help build and evolve BECU's legal contracting and vendor governance capabilities to meet the organization's growing technology and business needs.
